About The Position

Under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist and according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines, the Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures by interpreting, transcribing, and preparing medication(s) for dispensing. The role involves filling orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist, and performing a variety of related technical, clerical, and supply duties. The specific duties may vary depending on the work location (e.g., outpatient retail pharmacy, inpatient hospital pharmacy, infusion pharmacy) or shift assignment. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. This position is part of a professional career pathway, building upon the skills and competencies of the Pharmacy Technician I and II roles.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Temporary or permanent Michigan Pharmacy Technician license required upon hire with permanent Michigan Pharmacy Tech licensure required within one year from issuance of temporary license.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification is required by the State of Michigan to transition from temporary to permanent licensure.
  • Skills in mathematics and basic algebra.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyze data from various systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action in coordination with the pharmacists.
  • Effective communication skills to report and discuss findings, as needed with pharmacists, hospital personnel and external customers.
  • Ability to foster a positive, professional working relationship with coworkers.
  • Self-motivation.
  • Accuracy and initiative to complete routine and urgent tasks.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks within the constraints of stated objectives and to provide effective timely follow-up as needed.

  • Able to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Permanent Pharmacy Technician license in good standing with State of Michigan is required (for PT II and III).
  • Internal applicants must have no current disciplinary action plans and the most recent performance evaluation score above 2.0 (for PT II and III).
  • Demonstrates ability to complete and maintain all competencies of a Pharmacy Technician I (for PT II).
  • Demonstrates ability to complete and maintain all competencies of Pharmacy Technician II (for PT III).

Nice To Haves

  • 3-6 months of experience and/or training in hospital, retail pharmacy or elsewhere - OR - equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred (for Pharmacy Technician I).
  • If not previously trained, a 3-month formal training in pharmacy procedures is preferred (for Pharmacy Technician I).
  • Students currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy with a valid pharmacy intern license are not required to have Pharmacy Technician Certification.
  • Active professional organization involvement (for PT III).
  • Mentoring, leadership, or ownership roles on projects/activities within the department or organization (for PT III).
  • Valid driver's license may be needed for some job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist pharmacists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures by interpreting, transcribing, and preparing medication(s) for dispensing.
  • Fill orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist.
  • Perform a variety of related technical, clerical, and supply duties.
  • Demonstrate competencies specific to the population served for direct patient care.
  • Assist the pharmacist in obtaining patient home medication histories and clarifying/reconciling home medications.
  • Utilize the teach back method and provide patient medication education under the direction or supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Perform sterile medication compounding, which may include parenteral nutrition preparation, following institution policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with USP <797>.
  • Run and maintain any pharmacy robotic medication compounding equipment.
  • Assist the pharmacist, with oversight, in reviewing and comprehending pharmacokinetic reports, collecting and entering patient height/weight into the department documentation system, and reviewing and comprehending patient lab reports or other unit-specific information.
  • Support the bedside medication delivery program (meds to beds), including obtaining patient home medication histories and clarifying/reconciling home medications, coordinating medication delivery, and interacting with hospital personnel.
  • Provide specialty pharmacy program support, including coordination of shipping, medication ordering, and inventory management of specialty prescriptions.
  • Perform chemotherapy compounding following institutional policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with USP <797> and USP <800>.
  • Conduct advanced level home medication histories for admission reconciliation in the emergency department.
  • Perform advanced level pharmacy buying.
  • Perform advanced level automated dispensing cabinet configuration, maintenance, and optimization.
  • Conduct controlled substance diversion monitoring.
  • Perform advanced inventory management.
  • Assist with departmental scheduling for large departments.
  • Process prescriptions.
  • Manage inventory (re-stocking, rotation of stock, expired medication removal).
  • Perform prescription sales transactions through the point of sale system and cash register.
  • Fill prescriptions.
  • Answer and respond to phone calls.
  • Prioritize and process orders per instruction from the pharmacist.
  • Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and document as required.
  • Deliver supplies and medications to nursing units.
  • Operate the medication carousel (at selected locations).
  • Package/repackage medications.
  • Assist in receiving medication delivery.
  • Prepare non-sterile medication compounds.
  • Complete assigned inspections of medication storage locations.
