About The Position

Calvary Hospital and Calvary @Home, located in the Bronx, New York, has been dedicated to the palliative care of advanced cancer and other terminally ill patients and their families for over 125 years. Through a caring, compassionate philosophy of non-abandonment, the hospice provides a full spectrum of palliative services, including emotional, spiritual, and physical care. The hospice receives patients from referring institutions throughout New York City and the entire tristate area. This role assists in the packaging, labeling, preparation, and delivery of pharmaceutical products under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and provides technical support in all phases of drug distribution; assists with clerical and supply functions. Although work is generally light, lifting cartons of 25 to 30 pounds is not unusual.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Pharmacy Technician from a nationally accredited pharmacy technician certification program (e.g., Pharmacy Technician Certification Board [PTCB] or National Healthcareer Association [NHA]).
  • Ability to perceive differences in similarly named products.
  • Finger dexterity and mechanical aptitude in operation and maintenance of unit dose machines and typing.
  • Must be precise and accurate.
  • Must be able to perform short cycle repetitive activities.
  • Ability to occasionally lift heavy boxes (approximately 25-30 pounds).
  • Exhibits an ability and attitude relative to the spirit of caring and tradition at Calvary Hospital as required by specific job duties and functions.
  • High School diploma with math and science background.

Nice To Haves

  • Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the New York State Board of Pharmacy preferred
  • Previous training in unit dose systems and IV preparation is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operates unit-dose packaging equipment under supervision of pharmacist.
  • Prepares medication packaging records/logs for pharmacist review and sign-off.
  • Caps and seals products prepared in Pharmacy under supervision for unit dose medications.
  • Fills in unit dose picking station medication supplies.
  • Delivers medication to Nursing Stations (including IV's).
  • Picks up returns to Pharmacy at Nursing Stations.
  • Picks up medication orders from Nursing Stations.
  • Counts dosage units of medications.
  • Sets up IV and IVPB additives under supervision for compounding by a Pharmacist.
  • Prepares the automated dispensing cabinet fill list for a pharmacist to check.
  • Refills automated dispensing cabinets with bar code verification.
  • Identifies medications and IV solutions that have expired and segregates them from in-date.
