About The Position

Under the general supervision and work direction of the staff pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with departmental policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Current valid State of Indiana Pharmacy Technician license
  • Current national certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
  • At least 1 year of hospital-based pharmacy experience
  • Maintains qualifications as outlined in the Pharmacy Department Technician Ladder appropriate for a Technician II position.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers medications from the pharmacy to the nursing units and returns items from the nursing units as required, completing rounds in a timely and efficient manner. Properly places refrigerated items in the refrigerator.
  • Participates in the maintenance and stocking of the unit-based automated dispensing cabinets by gathering medications, presenting them for checking, and ensuring accuracy in stocking, placement, counts, and expiration/beyond-use dating.
  • Performs aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms, including practicing proper aseptic technique, preparing admixtures, preparing labels and controlled substance records, and performing visual inspection of parenteral solutions with quality control documentation.
  • Processes floor stock/requisitions for nursing units and ancillary areas, accurately filling requisitions, maintaining logs, ensuring proper stock levels, removing outdates, and entering low stock into the ordering book.
  • Handles controlled substances appropriately by preparing proof-of-use sheets, completing the process, sorting and filing, delivering controlled substances after pharmacist check, picking up expired/unusable controlled substances, accurately restocking and maintaining counts, and wasting/expiring controlled substances in accordance with procedures and regulations.
  • Provides general assistance to the pharmacist staff by assisting in the order entry area, accurately pulling medications for checking, labeling medications, answering phone calls, and resolving issues or triaging to pharmacists.
  • Restocks anesthesia automated dispensing cabinets and other trays and kits, ensuring correct items are placed, adding new proof of use sheets, completing documentation, keeping drug supply areas stocked, accurately receiving and stocking the wholesaler order, rotating stock, checking off invoices, and submitting completed invoices for payment approval.
  • Correctly and accurately packages bulk medications, ensuring proper packaging, correct labeling, maintaining controlled substance logs, and submitting all packaging to the pharmacist for final check before stocking.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties and follows hospital and department guidelines and policies/procedures, never releasing a medication prior to a pharmacist check, using appropriate judgment, referring problems to a pharmacist as needed, organizing time effectively, and demonstrating a consistent level of performance.
  • Performs basic tasks of other technician staff during low staff periods within the boundaries of their training and education.
  • Answers the telephone on the third ring or before using a customer-friendly voice; refers the call to a pharmacist if it is outside the scope of their license and/or usual responsibilities.
  • Is able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Assists in training new employees and students as requested.
  • Wears clothing that is clean, professional and appropriate and that adheres to the Hendricks Regional Health dress code as defined by the organization.
  • Knows and follows hospital and departmental procedures; knows location of hospital and departmental policy/procedure manuals.
  • Projects a professional image for the department.
