About The Position

Assists in drug preparation, storage, distribution, and inventory management within a variety of pharmacy environments. It is recommended this entry-level position participates in and completes Avera Health's Pharmacy Technician Education Program to prepare for Certified Pharmacy Technician examination. Upon successful Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination, or other approved certifying body, the technician-in-training will be promoted into the role of Pharmacy Technician. Avera's Pharmacy Technician Education Program consists of combined didactic, simulation, and experiential learning activities. Avera requires a two-year employment commitment upon completion of the Pharmacy Technician Education Program. Technician-in-Training works under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. Under pharmacist supervision, accurately inputs and/or prepares labels and packages inpatient or outpatient medication orders and prescriptions to maintain an efficient, accurate, and high-quality medication delivery system. Successfully communicates with nursing staff, physicians, customers, co-workers, supervisors, and management and participates in interdepartmental work groups and committees as assigned to promote high-quality communication and prevent patient harm. Demonstrates proficient knowledge of medications, calculations, regulations, and regulation limitations, personal protective equipment, and promotion of patient safety to ensure high-quality patient care and compliance. Performs clerical functions such as, but not limited to, billing, patient demographics and pharmacy inventory to promote an efficient medication distribution system. Assists with the collection and maintenance of records as needed by the Pharmacy Department and applicable accreditations such as Utilization Review Accreditation Commission, Joint Commission, NIOSH, OSHA, or other accreditations as may be required by law, practice standards, or departmental policy to maintain compliance with accreditation entities. May be responsible for assisting customers on the phone or in person. May run reports and use the automated dispensing system. Monthly inspections of medication stocks in assigned areas. Assist with inventory to prevent drug shortages or excesses. Proficiency of compounding practices, i.e. botox, chemotherapy.

Requirements

The individual must be able to work the hours specified.
Must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily including having visual acuity adequate to perform position duties and the ability to communicate effectively with others, hear, understand and distinguish speech and other sounds.
Pharmacy Technician in Training - South Dakota Board of Pharmacy Registered with respective state's Board of Pharmacy within State requirements within 30 Days
Certified Pharmacy Technician - Board of Pharmacy Pharmacy Technician Board Certification or alternative approved training/certification program. Extensions beyond 1 year may be available in some states within 1 Year
Registered Pharmacy Technician - Board of Pharmacy An active registration in the state of practice within 30 Days
Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Upon Hire or Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Upon Hire
