About The Position

This role involves assisting patients with prescription drop-offs, ensuring accurate patient and insurance information is captured and entered into the computer system. The Pharmacy Technician will communicate with insurance carriers for payment, and assist the pharmacist under direct supervision in accordance with regulations and company policies. Key duties include filling and labeling prescriptions, communicating with prescribers for new or refill prescriptions, and participating in a team-based approach to Pharmacy Medication Management. The technician will verify prescription accuracy at the point of sale, manage pharmacy inventory by monitoring stock, anticipating needs, placing orders, verifying receipts, and removing outdated drugs. Additional responsibilities include completing supply requisitions, answering phones promptly, responding to routine questions, and referring calls appropriately. The role also involves compounding ointments and creams, pre-packaging bulk medications, and assisting other pharmacy staff to maintain workflow and a clean work area. A commitment to staying aware of developments in the community and pharmaceutical fields is expected. This job description is not exhaustive and duties may change.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician Licensure.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Required.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to type accurately at 35 wpm.
  • Ability to do basic pharmaceutical math quickly and accurately.
  • Knowledge of medication brands and generic names.
  • Knowledge of insurance and third-party payment systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively.
  • Understanding of medical terminology and calculations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must have strong organizational skills.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population.

  • Must be a licensed driver with proof of personal liability and property damage insurance.

Nice To Haves

  • Pharmacy Technician through PTCB or NHA encouraged.
  • Pharmacy program literacy preferred.
  • Six months previous retail or hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients who are dropping off prescriptions, ensuring all appropriate patient and insurance information is obtained.
  • Ensure patient/insurance profiles are accurate in the computer system and accurately enter prescription information.
  • Communicate with insurance carriers to obtain payment for prescription claims.
  • Assist the pharmacist, under direct supervision, in the practice of pharmacy in accordance with local, state and federal regulations and company policies.
  • Assist the pharmacist with filling and labeling prescriptions.
  • Communicate with prescribers and their agents to obtain new or refill prescriptions.
  • Participate in a team-based approach to Pharmacy Medication Management.
  • At point of sale, verify that the customer receives correct prescription(s) and signs for them.
  • Maintain pharmacy inventory by checking pharmaceutical stock, anticipating needed medication and supplies, placing and expediting orders, verifying receipt of orders, and removing outdated drugs.
  • Complete requisitions for supplies as needed and receive incoming orders.
  • Answer phone properly and in a timely manner, respond to routine questions, and refer phone calls appropriately to the pharmacist.
  • Participate as a patient advocate by communicating with prescribers and their agents to receive new prescriptions and clarification on drug orders.
  • Compound ointments and creams under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Pre-package bulk medications and appropriately label/record keeping for outlying sites, migrant camps, school-based programs, etc.
  • Assist other pharmacy staff as needed.
  • Assist pharmacist maintaining workflow utilizing current Pharmacy guidelines/standards.
  • Maintain a clean work area utilizing current Pharmacy guidelines/standards.
  • Maintain an awareness of developments in the community and pharmaceutical fields which relate to job responsibility and integrate them into own practices.
  • Conduct Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities under the guidance of the Pharmacy Director.
  • Keep a record of numerous statistical data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
