Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, this role procures, prepares, packages, distributes, and disposes of medications and pharmaceutical supplies to assist the department in providing quality pharmaceutical care for all patients. The technician maintains an established inventory of drugs and commonly used supplies, re-orders and stocks items upon delivery to ensure immediate availability. They maintain competency and follow departmental, USP, DEA, and FDA guidelines when repackaging and compounding pharmaceutical products. The role involves operating, troubleshooting, monitoring, and cleaning departmental automation and equipment, and ensuring pharmacist product verification and facilitating timely medication distribution to maintain product integrity. Accurate record-keeping, including charging and crediting, is essential. The technician responds to customer needs by answering phone calls, receiving and distributing messages, and triaging requests appropriately. They understand and implement time management and prioritization of tasks to ensure timely and safe patient care. This role also assists with operational support functions, including minor housekeeping activities and department cleaning/disinfecting/decontaminating standards to maintain the work area. Regular quality assurance inspections focused on TJC requirements, including examination of product integrity and expiration, are conducted. Competency and adherence to departmental, OSHA, USP, and EPA guidelines for handling hazardous and non-hazardous products are maintained. Participation in professional activities and organizations is encouraged to stay knowledgeable of current trends, practices, and developments. All required training and competency assessments are completed in a timely fashion, and educational in-services are attended as appropriate. Assistance with the orientation and training of new personnel may be required, and the technician may serve as a resource for less experienced staff, providing technical information and guidance in pharmacy techniques and policies. Other duties may be assigned or requested.
