Assists licensed pharmacists in technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of medications. This includes accurately selecting, preparing, and labeling medications for patients, including hazardous drugs and controlled substances. The role also involves screening phone calls, assisting with daily pharmacy procurement, inventory control, and outdate checking. Specific tasks may include completing documentation for controlled substances, performing nonsterile compounding and sterile IV admixture following USP standards, inspecting medication storage areas, and completing medication admission histories. The technician is expected to seek additional duties when required work is done and accept other assigned tasks. They may also participate in quality improvement initiatives, assist in training other technicians, and support area leaders. Responsibilities include obtaining and recording patient demographic information, data entry into the pharmacy system, insurance verification, label generation, and cashiering. Competence in third-party billing functions is required, along with the ability to provide age-appropriate patient care. In some cases, the technician may obtain immunization certification and administer immunizations under pharmacist supervision. The role may also involve operating an Advocate Health-owned vehicle to deliver medications and medical supplies.
