Pharmacy Technician / Pharm Tech Apprenticeship
About The Position
Walgreens Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technician Apprentices work in a patient-centric pharmacy environment, interacting with customers and developing patient relationships. Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and in accordance with state, federal, and company requirements, the role supports pharmacy practice and other Pharmacy Department duties. Technicians use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions, and deliver a distinctive customer experience. Walgreens provides an “earn while you learn” Pharmacy Technician Training Program recognized by ASHP and the Department of Labor. The program offers courses, learning activities, resources, and on-the-job experiences to build foundational and advanced pharmacy skills and help participants work toward PTCB certification and any required state certification or registration. The position is open to people new to pharmacy work as well as experienced pharmacy technicians.
Requirements
- Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English, except in Puerto Rico.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.
- Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state-required certification or registration; PTCB certification is a condition of promotion to senior technician if not otherwise earned.
Nice To Haves
- Six months of experience in a retail environment.
- Prior work experience with Walgreens.
- Good math skills for accurately counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
- Good computer skills.
- Knowledge of store inventory control.
- PTCB certification.
Responsibilities
- Assist the pharmacist in pharmacy practice and other Pharmacy Department duties under direct supervision and in accordance with applicable regulations and company policies.
- Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions; if PTCB certified, assist with and coach pharmacy technicians in pharmacy systems and cashiers in pharmacy register operation.
- Engage customers and patients, offer help with products and services, resolve issues, answer questions, and develop relationships with valuable customers.
- Model customer-service best practices and Walgreens service traits with team members.
- Enter patient and drug information, fill prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring medications, verify medicines, and check for possible interactions.
- Assist pharmacists with scheduling and maintaining workflow.
- Immediately report prescription errors to the pharmacist on duty and follow pharmacy error and Quality Improvement Program procedures.
- Follow the Walgreen Co. Good Faith Dispensing policy during applicable prescription dispensing activities.
- Register sales on the assigned cash register and collect and handle cash as required; help customers locate over-the-counter products when possible.
- Handle telephone calls that do not require the pharmacist's personal attention, including calls to physicians.
- Correct and resubmit manual third-party prescription claims promptly and efficiently, and perform assigned clerical duties.
- Support inventory management by ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing pharmaceutical shipments; apply asset-protection practices and file claims for shipment overages, shortages, order errors, or damaged prescription drugs.
- May assist the pharmacist with clinical services, including collecting and labeling blood or urine samples, and coordinate services with pharmacy staff, Walgreens healthcare clinics, and external providers.
- Help maintain relationships with local medical professionals and organizations through provider detailing and outreach.
- Help keep the Pharmacy Department stocked, clean, neat, and orderly.
- Comply with company policies and procedures and maintain respectful relationships with coworkers.
- Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned.
- Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or required state certification or registration; otherwise, earn PTCB certification as a condition of promotion to senior technician.
- Attend training requested by the Manager, acquire continuing education credits, and maintain knowledge and skills in healthcare and pharmacy.
