About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for a variety of tasks related to medication preparation, inventory management, customer service, documentation, and administrative support within the pharmacy department. This role ensures the accurate and efficient dispensing of medications, maintains appropriate stock levels, provides excellent customer service to patients and healthcare professionals, and adheres to all regulatory guidelines for documentation and record-keeping. The technician also supports the pharmacy department with administrative duties and assists in maintaining the formulary and inventory.

Requirements

  • Ability to review and prepare medications for Pharmacist approval.
  • Proficiency in ensuring correct selection of dosage, form, strength, and quantity of medications.
  • Skill in preparing unit dose medications with bar code labels.
  • Knowledge of labeling medication according to regulatory guidelines.
  • Ability to prepare intravenous (IV) medications using sterile aseptic technique as described by USP guidelines.
  • Experience in mixing pharmaceutical preparations, filling bottles with prescribed tablets and capsules, and creating labels.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate medication stock levels.
  • Experience in ordering supplies and medications through pharmacy wholesalers and other suppliers.
  • Skill in monitoring drugs to evaluate and establish appropriate stock levels.
  • Ability to restock supplies and medications in the pharmacy and Pyxis units.
  • Capability to deliver medications to ancillary departments.
  • Skill in monitoring pharmaceutical inventory.
  • Ability to keep the formulary up to date.
  • Proficiency in monitoring medication outdates.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a pleasant demeanor.
  • Ability to determine the level of expertise required to address patient/health provider needs and refer them appropriately.
  • Ability to consult with pharmacist on medication questions and relay information.
  • Proficiency in documenting unit dose preparations, compounded preparations, and medications dispensed to Pyxis.
  • Knowledge of maintaining and storing pharmacy records according to regulatory guidelines (Iowa State Board of Pharmacy, Drug Enforcement Agency, FDA).
  • Ability to handle storage of CIII-CV records, T3 statements, and invoices.
  • Capability to provide administrative support, including initiating and receiving calls, and screening/routing visitors/calls.
  • Ability to schedule appointments for drug representatives and anticoagulation clinic patients.
  • Skill in cleaning equipment according to prescribed methods.
  • Ability to maintain and audit billed transactions for inpatient and outpatient medications.
  • Proficiency in inputting charges for medications from ancillary departments.
  • Experience with NDC Crosswalk on Macrohelix for the 340B Program.
  • Ability to audit patient visits on Macrohelix for the 340B Program.

Responsibilities

  • Review and prepare medications for Pharmacist approval, ensuring correct dosage, form, strength, and quantity.
  • Prepare unit dose medications with bar code labels for automated dispensing cabinets (Pyxis).
  • Label medications according to regulatory guidelines prior to pharmacist verification.
  • Prepare intravenous (IV) medications using sterile aseptic technique.
  • Mix pharmaceutical preparations, fill bottles with prescribed medications, and create labels.
  • Maintain appropriate medication stock levels for the pharmacy and patient care areas.
  • Order supplies and medications through wholesalers and other suppliers.
  • Monitor drugs to establish appropriate stock levels and restock supplies and medications in the pharmacy and Pyxis units.
  • Deliver medications to ancillary departments upon request.
  • Monitor pharmaceutical inventory and keep the formulary up to date.
  • Monitor medication outdates in the pharmacy, Pyxis stations, and crash carts.
  • Triage customer service inquiries and demonstrate excellent customer service.
  • Determine the level of expertise required to address patient/health provider needs and refer them appropriately.
  • Consult with the pharmacist on medication questions and relay information to patients/providers.
  • Perform and maintain documentation for unit dose preparations, compounded preparations, and medications dispensed to Pyxis.
