Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, this role procures, prepares, packages, distributes, and disposes of medications and pharmaceutical supplies to assist the department in providing quality pharmaceutical care for all patients. The technician maintains an inventory of drugs and supplies, re-orders and stocks items, and ensures immediate availability. They must maintain competency and follow departmental, USP, DEA, and FDA guidelines when repackaging and compounding pharmaceutical products. The role involves operating, troubleshooting, monitoring, and cleaning departmental automation and equipment, ensuring pharmacist product verification, and facilitating timely medication distribution. Accurate record-keeping, patient profile maintenance, and responding to customer needs via phone calls and message triaging are key responsibilities. The technician must understand and implement time management and prioritization for timely and safe patient care. They also assist with operational support, including housekeeping and maintaining work area cleanliness according to standards. Regular quality assurance inspections focused on TJC requirements, including product integrity and expiration, are conducted. Competency in handling, preparing, distributing, and disposing of hazardous and non-hazardous products according to departmental, OSHA, USP, and EPA guidelines is required. Participation in professional activities to stay current with trends and practices, completing required training, and attending educational in-services are expected. The role may also involve assisting in the orientation and training of new personnel and serving as a resource for less experienced staff.
