About The Position

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is seeking a qualified and dependable Pharmacy Technician to support pharmacy operations within a federal correctional healthcare environment on site at FCI Gilmer in Glenville, West Virginia. This is for day shift, Monday through Friday, 35 hours per week across seven one-hour sessions a day. The Pharmacy Technician works under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and as part of the institution's healthcare team to provide safe, accurate, and timely pharmacy services to incarcerated patients. The position requires a high level of professionalism, attention to detail, confidentiality, and adherence to federal, state, Bureau of Prisons, and institutional policies and procedures. Because this position is located within a federal correctional institution, the Pharmacy Technician must be able to balance patient care responsibilities with institutional security requirements. The Pharmacy Technician is expected to maintain professional boundaries when interacting with incarcerated patients, follow all security procedures governing movement, communication, medication distribution, and access to restricted areas, maintain accountability for medications, pharmacy supplies, equipment, keys, credentials, and other controlled resources, immediately report security concerns, medication discrepancies, suspected diversion, or policy violations through the appropriate chain of command, work cooperatively with both healthcare and correctional personnel, and maintain a professional, respectful, and impartial demeanor at all times.

Requirements

Current registration with the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician in good standing.
Current national pharmacy technician certification (CPhT) through one of the following: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), or National Healthcareer Association (NHA/ExCPT).
High school diploma or GED.
Completed formal pharmacy technician program with internship.
At least one year of experience.
Current BLS CPR Card.
Knowledge of pharmacy terminology, medication names, dosage forms, and pharmacy procedures.
Ability to accurately perform pharmacy calculations and medication-related tasks.
Ability to operate pharmacy computer systems and other electronic healthcare systems.
Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and applicable federal requirements.
Ability to work effectively in a secure correctional environment.
Must meet applicable Federal Bureau of Prisons employment, security, medical, background investigation, and suitability requirements.
Active registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
Current national pharmacy technician certification through PTCB or NHA/ExCPT.
Maintain all required registrations, certifications, continuing education, and other credentials throughout employment.
Applicants must meet applicable Federal Bureau of Prisons employment requirements.
Depending on the position and institution, BOP employment may require a background investigation, drug screening, medical examination, and the ability to perform correctional work.
BOP states that employees working in correctional institutions must be able to perform correctional work regardless of their specific occupation.

Responsibilities

Assist pharmacists with the preparation, dispensing, packaging, labeling, and distribution of medications to incarcerated patients.
Receive and process medication orders and prescription requests under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Accurately enter prescription and medication information into pharmacy and electronic health record systems.
Prepare medications for pharmacist verification and final dispensing.
Assist with medication distribution and delivery according to institutional procedures.
Maintain accurate medication and pharmacy records.
Assist with inventory management, including ordering, receiving, stocking, rotating, and monitoring pharmaceutical supplies.
Monitor medication inventory for expiration dates, shortages, discrepancies, and storage requirements.
Assist with the secure handling and documentation of controlled substances in accordance with federal, state, and BOP requirements.
Identify medication, prescription, or documentation discrepancies and promptly report them to the pharmacist.
Assist with medication reconciliation and other pharmacy-related healthcare activities as directed by the pharmacist.
Communicate professionally with pharmacists, physicians, nurses, healthcare staff, correctional staff, and incarcerated patients.
Answer routine pharmacy-related questions within the scope of the pharmacy technician role and refer clinical or medication-related questions to the pharmacist.
Maintain a clean, organized, secure, and sanitary pharmacy work area.
Protect patient information and maintain confidentiality at all times.
Follow all BOP security procedures and institutional policies.
Perform other pharmacy technician duties within the scope of practice and as assigned by the pharmacist or supervisor.
