About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for counting, pouring, filling and processing roles associated with each prescription. He/she will also be responsible for many of the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy and professionally interacting with patients and other Grand Itasca staff. He/she will perform these duties in accordance with the standards, laws, regulations and policies of the profession, applicable regulating bodies, and the Health System.

Requirements

  • Previous hospital/retail pharmacy experience preferred, or successful completion of the FPS Tech 240 Classroom Training.
  • Pharmacy technician certification or ability to obtain certification within six months. Maintain required continuing education for CPhT certification.
  • Pharmacy technician registration with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy. Adhere to the requirements of the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy for pharmacy technicians.
  • Excellent customer service skills, proficient in the English language, good attention to detail, ability to problem solve effectively, ability to follow policies and procedures, basic math skills, basic typing skills and excellent communication skills all highly desired.
  • Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, codes and standards of Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital.

  • Maintains reliable and consistent attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Properly maintain patient profiles including, but not limited to, demographic information (name, birth date, phone number, allergies, address, gender), medical disease history, medication history (including over-the-counter medications if possible), insurance information, easy-open cap authorization and cashiering.
  • Under the supervision of the pharmacist, prepares appropriate medication. This includes selecting product counting or reconstituting and packaging of product.
  • Prepare extemporaneous compounds after passing compounding competency.
  • Provides limited insurance and third party billing functions including: data entry of customer demographics and their-party information, obtaining prior authorizations from appropriate their-party carriers, maintaining files of prior authorization, investigating and correcting errors in submission to their parties and handling private insurance, workers compensation and third-party insurance coverage and prescription-related issues.
  • Performs any of the following clerical duties to ensure efficient operations depending upon the needs of the pharmacy: Inventory control including ordering and stocking, preparing medications for delivery or mailing, general housekeeping and display set up.
  • Answers and directs telephone communications to the appropriate pharmacist or supervisor. Resolves and trouble shoots any drug distribution problems that may be received in the pharmacy, escalating problems only when the problem is outside of their realm of responsibility.
  • Assists in job development, cross-training and training for new employees and students.
  • Participates in staff meetings; attends and participates in other meetings as necessary.
  • Access the Minnesota Prescription Monitoring Program with suspected drug abuse/diversion behaviors (i.e. patient using multiple providers, early refills, using cash instead of insurance) and alert pharmacist if these behaviors or suspected/confirmed abuse is occurring.
  • Perform cash register transactions.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
