The Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures by interpreting, transcribing, and preparing medication(s) for dispensing. They fill orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist and perform a variety of related technical, clerical, and supply duties. The duties may vary depending on the work location (e.g., outpatient retail pharmacy, inpatient hospital pharmacy, infusion pharmacy) or shift assignment. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. This role has a career pathway with levels I, II, and III, building upon skills and competencies. Pharmacy Technician I requires 3-6 months of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, or a 3-month formal training. Pharmacy Technician II and III require a permanent Michigan Pharmacy Technician license and build upon the competencies of the previous level, with specific duties outlined for outpatient/retail, hospital, and infusion pharmacy settings. Pharmacy Technician III may also involve chemotherapy compounding, advanced home medication histories, automated dispensing cabinet configuration, controlled substance diversion monitoring, advanced inventory management, and departmental scheduling. Additional criteria for Pharmacy Technician III may include active professional organization involvement and mentoring/leadership roles.
