About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures by interpreting, transcribing, and preparing medication(s) for dispensing. They fill orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist and perform a variety of related technical, clerical, and supply duties. The duties may vary depending on the work location (e.g., outpatient retail pharmacy, inpatient hospital pharmacy, infusion pharmacy) or shift assignment. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. This role has a career pathway with levels I, II, and III, building upon skills and competencies. Pharmacy Technician I requires 3-6 months of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, or a 3-month formal training. Pharmacy Technician II and III require a permanent Michigan Pharmacy Technician license and build upon the competencies of the previous level, with specific duties outlined for outpatient/retail, hospital, and infusion pharmacy settings. Pharmacy Technician III may also involve chemotherapy compounding, advanced home medication histories, automated dispensing cabinet configuration, controlled substance diversion monitoring, advanced inventory management, and departmental scheduling. Additional criteria for Pharmacy Technician III may include active professional organization involvement and mentoring/leadership roles.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Pharmacy Technician I: 3-6 months of experience and/or training in hospital, retail pharmacy or elsewhere - OR - equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
  • Pharmacy Technician I: If not previously trained, a 3-month formal training in pharmacy procedures is preferred.
  • Temporary or permanent Michigan Pharmacy Technician license required upon hire with permanent Michigan Pharmacy Tech licensure required within one year from issuance of temporary license.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification is required by the State of Michigan to transition from temporary to permanent licensure.
  • Students currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy with a valid pharmacy intern license are not required to have Pharmacy Technician Certification.
  • Skills in mathematics and basic algebra.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyze data from various systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action in coordination with the pharmacists.
  • Effective communication skills to report and discuss findings, as needed with pharmacists, hospital personnel and external customers.
  • Ability to foster a positive, professional working relationship with coworkers.

  • Work which is constantly and exceptionally tiring mentally and/or visually. Conditions exist more than 90% of the work time.
  • Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.
  • Able to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Pharmacy Technician II: Permanent Pharmacy Technician license in good standing with State of Michigan is required.
  • Internal applicants must have no current disciplinary action plans and the most recent performance evaluation score above 2.0.
  • Pharmacy Technician III: Permanent Pharmacy Technician license in good standing with the State of Michigan.
  • Internal applicants must have no current disciplinary action plans and the most recent performance evaluation score above 2.0.
  • Valid driver's license may be needed for some job functions.

  • Function in the role of OR Technician, ED Technician or Decentralized Pharmacy Technician (specific to Tech II).
  • Assist the pharmacist in obtaining patient home medication histories and clarifying/reconciling home medications (specific to Tech II/III).
  • Utilize the teach back method and provide patient medication education under the direction or supervision of the pharmacist (specific to Tech II/III).
  • Perform sterile medication compounding, which may include parenteral nutrition preparation, following institution policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with USP <797> (specific to Tech II/III).
  • Run and maintain any pharmacy robotic medication compounding equipment (specific to Tech II).
  • Assist the pharmacist, with oversight, in reviewing and comprehending pharmacokinetic reports, collecting and entering patient height/weight, reviewing and comprehending patient lab reports or other unit specific information (specific to Tech II).
  • Support the bedside medication delivery program (meds to beds) (specific to Tech III outpatient).
  • Support specialty pharmacy programs, including coordination of shipping, medication ordering, and inventory management (specific to Tech III outpatient).
  • Perform chemotherapy compounding following institutional policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with USP <797> and USP <800> (specific to Tech III hospital/infusion).
  • Perform advanced level home medication histories for admission reconciliation in the emergency department (specific to Tech III hospital/infusion).
  • Perform advanced level pharmacy buying (specific to Tech III hospital/infusion).
  • Perform advanced level automated dispensing cabinet configuration, maintenance, and optimization (specific to Tech III hospital/infusion).
  • Perform controlled substance diversion monitoring (specific to Tech III hospital/infusion).
  • Perform advanced inventory management (specific to Tech III hospital/infusion).
  • Perform departmental scheduling for large departments (specific to Tech III hospital/infusion).
  • Process prescriptions, including prescription filling and performing sales transactions through the point of sale system and cash register (specific to outpatient/retail).
  • Manage inventory, including re-stocking, rotation of stock, and expired medication removal (specific to outpatient/retail and hospital).
  • Answer and respond to phone calls.
  • Prioritize and process orders per instruction from the pharmacist.
  • Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and document as required.
  • Deliver supplies and medications to nursing units (specific to hospital).
  • Operate the medication carousel (at selected locations) (specific to hospital).
  • Package/repackage medications (specific to hospital).
  • Assist in receiving medication delivery (specific to hospital).
  • Prepare non-sterile medication compounds (specific to hospital).
