A Brief Overview The technician will work to obtain patient home medication lists from relevant sources, including but not limited to patient or family interview, discharge medication lists, prescription bottles, and phone calls to retail pharmacies, physician offices, and nursing homes. They will also document in the electronic medical record and clarify allergy information, as well as home pharmacy. The technician will be responsible for communication of relevant medication and allergy information to a pharmacist. They will help promote the safe and effective use of hospital and pharmacy technology throughout the Tidelands Health System. The technician will be responsible for working with all other departments throughout Tidelands Health to ensure accurate and timely medication history collection. In addition, the technician will triage any issue related to medication or health compliance to appropriate staff as needed (case managers, transitional care coordinators, and care coordinators through Tidelands Community Care Network). The technician agrees to support the goals, objectives, and proper function of the department and the hospital to provide positive patient outcomes while maintaining patient confidentiality. The technician will comply with the policies, laws, regulations, and standards that govern the practice of pharmacy as well as those of the hospital. The technician will maintain an appropriate level of competency to perform the job duties as required by the department, the hospital and any regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent Required
  • One (1) year of pharmacy technician experience Required
  • Proficiency in calculations.
  • Strong knowledge of medications required
  • Typing and Computer-entry skills required
  • Good oral & written communication skills required
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to prioritize and balance workload
  • Ability to work under direct or minimal supervision and handle stress appropriately
  • Ability to work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staffs
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule
  • Ability to set priorities, makes decisions, and responds quickly to emergency requests
  • Intense and consistent concentration with attention to detail requires speed and accuracy.
  • Requires operation of mechanical & electrical equipment and listening to low levels of noise.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
  • Technician registration with LLR/SC Board of Pharmacy Required

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma diploma with specialized training in an accredited Pharmacy Technician program Preferred
  • Prior retail and/or hospital-based experience Preferred
  • Nationally PTCB Certification Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Answer telephones and respond to questions and problems as authorized.
  • Must recognize most pharmaceuticals with basic understanding of dosage, dosage forms, and routes of administration
  • Locate and evaluate pharmaceutical information
  • Review and update Tidelands Medication reconciliation policy as needed.
  • Precepts Pharmacy Tech Students & participates in applied education of Pharmacy Students
  • Complete pharmacy quality improvement assignments.
  • Active role in Departmental projects such as Pharmacy Week/Poison Prevention Week/Health Fairs
  • Attends annual orientation and other in-services as required by pharmacy and GHS.
  • Completes and passes periodic competency tests as required by the department, the hospital or regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain continuing education credits as required by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, the Board of Pharmacy, and any other regulatory agencies.
