About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician Trainee provides entry‑level assistance in prescription processing, customer service, inventory activities, and technology operations within the pharmacy. The trainee learns and practices job functions under close oversight to ensure safe, accurate, and high‑quality patient care. As skills develop, additional responsibilities may be assigned in alignment with state regulations and employer training requirements. The Trainee is actively participating in the Kinney Certification Program to become a Registered Pharmacy Technician within 2 years. This role works under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, follows standard procedures and state regulations to accomplish assigned tasks, and assists in orienting and training employees. This role is intended for individuals who are actively progressing toward becoming a Registered Pharmacy Technician.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (or currently enrolled) or GED
  • Registered with the State of Vermont as a Pharmacy Technician (for Vermont Employees)

  • AS Degree or Higher
  • Hospital or retail pharmacy experience

Responsibilities

  • Assist customers at the pharmacy counter and drive‑thru, providing courteous and efficient service.
  • Help customers locate over‑the‑counter products and route clinical questions to the pharmacist.
  • Enter, update, and maintain accurate patient and prescription information in the pharmacy system.
  • Ensure appropriate billing through third party payors and review and correct claims as necessary.
  • Ensure that every prescription has been checked by a pharmacist prior to dispensing.
  • Locate prescription files and other manual records from storage as needed.
  • Prepare and file pharmacy documentation for pharmacist signatures and review.
  • Count, label, and prepare medications according to prescription orders and regulatory guidelines.
  • Support non‑sterile compounding activities as permitted by state regulations.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in ordering, receiving, and storing medication inventory.
  • Monitor expiration dates and rotate stock.
  • Perform return‑to‑stock procedures and cycle counting accurately.
  • Report inventory shortages or discrepancies promptly.
  • Maintain intermediate to advanced understanding of pharmacy tools, technology, and dispensing systems.
  • Follow all state and federal regulations, including controlled substance and HIPAA requirements.
  • Comply with all company operational and quality assurance policies.
  • Assist in organizing and maintaining the will‑call area.
  • Support patient care programs and initiatives.
  • Demonstrate integrity and always protect patient confidentiality.
  • Complete all required training within prescribed timelines.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe pharmacy work areas.
  • Support team members and perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Works under direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Follows standard procedures and state regulations to accomplish assigned tasks.
