The Pharmacy Technician Trainee will train and participate in inventory management, storage, preparation, and delivery of medications. This role involves triaging phone calls, handling medication requests appropriately (deferring clinical decisions to a pharmacist), and effectively communicating with pharmacy colleagues, customers, patients, and hospital staff. A key aspect of this role is completing all required training and activities to prepare for and pass the PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Be enrolled in the URMC ASHP accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program (PTTP) or become certified through an alternate method within 180 days required
  • PHAR-C - Certified Pharmacy Tech via the PTCB Certification Exam within 180 days required

Responsibilities

  • Trains and participates in medication storage and inventory management activities, including stocking medication areas, rotating stock, checking expiration dates, and removing expiring medications.
  • Trains and participates in customer service activities, employing courtesy and constructive communication with all stakeholders. Triages phone calls and handles medication requests, deferring clinical decisions to a pharmacist. Utilizes service recovery techniques to troubleshoot and solve problems, maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Prepares for PTCB Certification by completing the 12-week PTU program, including didactic, simulation, and experiential training. Completes computer-based learning modules, organizes study materials, attends experiential rotations, participates in assigned activities, and completes simulation tasks.
  • Trains and participates in efficient medication delivery activities, utilizing pneumatic tube systems and hand-delivering patient medications, documenting transfers and tracking as required.
  • Trains and participates in medication preparation activities, including preparing medication orders, obtaining correct medication, determining dose quantities, packaging medications, completing logs, utilizing safety check procedures, operating automated systems, and performing medication re-packaging.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
