About The Position

Walgreens Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technician Apprentices work in a patient-centric pharmacy environment, interacting with customers and building patient relationships. Walgreens provides an “earn while you learn” training program recognized by ASHP and the Department of Labor, with courses, learning activities, resources, and on-the-job experience intended to prepare participants for Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification and a career in pharmacy care.

Under the pharmacist’s direct supervision and in accordance with state and federal regulations and company policies, the technician assists with pharmacy practice and other Pharmacy Department duties. The role uses pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions, while delivering a distinctive customer experience. Technicians earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or any state-required certification or registration; PTCB certification is a condition of promotion to senior technician if not otherwise earned.

Requirements

• Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English, except in Puerto Rico.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.

Nice To Haves

• Six months of experience in a retail environment.
• Prior work experience with Walgreens.
• Good math skills for accurately counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
• Good computer skills.
• Knowledge of store inventory control.
• PTCB certification.

Responsibilities

• Assist the pharmacist under direct supervision in the practice of pharmacy and perform other Pharmacy Department duties in accordance with applicable regulations and company policies.
• Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions; if PTCB certified, assist and coach pharmacy technicians and cashiers in pharmacy systems and register operations.
• Greet customers and patients, offer assistance with products and services, resolve issues, answer questions, and develop relationships with valuable customers.
• Model customer-service best practices, including courteous interpersonal habits and proactive assistance.
• Enter patient and drug information accurately; retrieve, count, and pour medications; verify medications and check for possible interactions.
• Assist pharmacists with scheduling and maintaining workflow.
• Immediately report prescription errors to the pharmacist on duty and follow company error policies and the Quality Improvement Program.
• Follow the Good Faith Dispensing policy during applicable prescription dispensing activities.
• Register sales on the assigned cash register and collect and handle cash as required; assist customers in locating over-the-counter products when possible.
• Handle telephone calls that do not require the pharmacist’s personal attention, including calls to physicians.
• Correct and resubmit manual third-party prescription claims promptly and efficiently, and perform assigned clerical duties.
• Support inventory management by ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing pharmaceutical shipments; apply asset-protection practices and file claims for shipment overages, shortages, order errors, or damaged prescription drugs.
• May assist the pharmacist with clinical services, including collecting and properly labeling blood or urine samples, and help coordinate services with Walgreens healthcare clinics and external providers.
• Help maintain relationships with the local medical community through provider detailing and outreach to health groups, retirement homes, nursing homes, and other forums.
• Help maintain the Pharmacy Department’s supplies, cleanliness, neatness, and orderly appearance.
• Comply with company policies and procedures and maintain respectful relationships with coworkers.
• Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned.
• Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state-required certification or registration; otherwise, earn PTCB certification as a condition of promotion to senior technician.
• Attend training requested by the Manager, acquire continuing education credits, and maintain current healthcare and pharmacy knowledge.
