About The Position

Walgreens Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technician Apprentices work in a patient-centric pharmacy environment, interacting with customers and developing patient relationships. The role assists the pharmacist under direct supervision and in accordance with state and federal regulations and company policies. Technicians use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and medication information and process prescriptions, while helping deliver a distinctive customer experience. Walgreens provides an earn-while-you-learn training program recognized by ASHP and the Department of Labor. The program offers courses, learning activities, resources, and on-the-job experience intended to build foundational and advanced pharmacy technician knowledge and prepare participants for Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification. Technicians must earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated program and/or meet state certification or registration requirements; PTCB certification is a condition of promotion to senior technician when otherwise required. The position also includes prescription processing and dispensing support, customer service, pharmacy operations, inventory activities, clerical work, and assistance with clinical services as assigned. The role requires a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend hours.

Requirements

Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English, except in Puerto Rico.
Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.
Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or meet state-required certification or registration requirements; PTCB certification is required for promotion to senior technician where applicable.

Nice To Haves

Six months of experience in a retail environment.
Prior work experience with Walgreens.
Good math skills for accurately counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
Good computer skills.
Knowledge of store inventory control.
PTCB certification.

Responsibilities

Assist the pharmacist under direct supervision and in accordance with state, federal, and company policies and procedures.
Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions; ensure information is entered correctly.
Retrieve, count, and pour pharmaceutical drugs, verify medication accuracy, and check for possible interactions.
If PTCB certified, assist with and coach pharmacy technicians in pharmacy systems and cashiers in operating pharmacy cash registers.
Engage customers and patients by greeting them, offering assistance, resolving issues, answering questions, and developing relationships with valuable customers.
Model and share customer-service best practices, including proactive assistance, identifying customer needs, and providing service until customers are satisfied.
Follow the Walgreen Co. Pharmacy Code of Conduct and Good Faith Dispensing policy.
Assist with pharmacist scheduling and maintaining pharmacy workflow.
Immediately report prescription errors to the pharmacist on duty and follow company error-reporting and Quality Improvement Program procedures.
Register sales on the assigned cash register and collect and handle cash as required; assist customers in locating over-the-counter products when possible.
Handle telephone calls that do not require the pharmacist's personal attention, including calls to physicians.
Correct and resubmit manual third-party prescription claims promptly and efficiently, and perform assigned clerical duties.
Support inventory management by ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing pharmaceutical shipments; follow asset-protection techniques and file claims for shipment overages, shortages, order errors, and damaged prescription drugs.
May assist the pharmacist with clinical services, including collecting and properly labeling blood or urine samples, and help coordinate services with pharmacy staff, Walgreens healthcare clinics, and external providers.
Help maintain relationships with the local medical community through provider detailing and outreach to healthcare groups, retirement homes, nursing homes, and other forums.
Help keep the Pharmacy Department supplied, clean, neat, and orderly.
Comply with company policies and procedures and maintain respectful relationships with coworkers.
Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned.
Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or meet state-required certification or registration requirements.
Attend manager-requested training, obtain continuing education credits, and maintain knowledge and skills in healthcare and pharmacy, including current developments.
