About The Position

Walgreens Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technician Apprentices work in a patient-centric pharmacy environment, interacting with customers and building patient relationships. Walgreens provides an earn-while-you-learn training program recognized by ASHP and the Department of Labor. The program develops foundational and advanced pharmacy knowledge, skills, and on-the-job experience to prepare apprentices for Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification and a career in healthcare.

Under the pharmacist’s direct supervision, the technician assists in the practice of pharmacy and other Pharmacy Department duties in accordance with state and federal regulations and company policies. The role uses pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions, supports pharmacy operations and inventory, and delivers a distinctive customer experience. Technicians earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state-required certification or registration.

Requirements

• Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English, except in Puerto Rico.
• Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.

Nice To Haves

• Six months of experience in a retail environment.
• Prior work experience with Walgreens.
• Good math skills for accurately counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
• Good computer skills.
• Knowledge of store inventory control.
• PTCB certification.

Responsibilities

• Assist the pharmacist in the practice of pharmacy and other Pharmacy Department duties under direct supervision and in accordance with applicable regulations and company policies.
• Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information, enter information accurately, and process prescriptions.
• Fill prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring medications, verifying the medicine, and checking for possible interactions.
• Assist pharmacists with scheduling and maintaining workflow.
• Report prescription errors immediately to the pharmacist on duty and follow company error-reporting and Quality Improvement Program procedures.
• Follow the company’s Good Faith Dispensing policy during applicable prescription dispensing activities.
• Register sales on the assigned cash register and collect and handle cash as required.
• Assist customers in locating over-the-counter products when possible.
• Handle telephone calls that do not require the pharmacist’s personal attention, including calls to physicians.
• Correct and resubmit manual third-party prescription claims promptly and perform assigned clerical duties.
• Support inventory management, including ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing pharmaceutical shipments; identify and report relevant shipment discrepancies or damaged goods.
• Assist with clinical services as required, including collecting and properly labeling patient blood or urine samples, and coordinate with pharmacy staff, Walgreens healthcare clinics, and external providers.
• Help maintain relationships with local medical providers and community organizations through provider outreach and other activities.
• Keep the Pharmacy Department stocked, clean, neat, and orderly.
• Follow company policies and procedures and maintain respectful relationships with coworkers.
• Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned.
• Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state-required certification or registration; otherwise, earn PTCB certification as a condition of promotion to senior technician.
• Attend manager-requested training, obtain continuing education credits, and maintain current healthcare and pharmacy knowledge.
• Greet customers and patients, offer assistance, resolve issues, and answer questions to provide a positive customer experience.
• Model customer-service best practices, including courteous interpersonal habits and proactively identifying and meeting customer needs.
• Develop strong relationships with valuable customers.
