About The Position

Walgreens Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technician Apprentices provide patient-centric pharmacy service, interact with customers, and develop patient relationships. Walgreens offers an earn-while-you-learn training program recognized by ASHP and the Department of Labor, designed to build foundational and advanced pharmacy knowledge, skills, and on-the-job experience and help participants pursue Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification.

Under the pharmacist’s direct supervision and in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and company policies, the technician assists with pharmacy practice and department duties. The role uses pharmacy systems to retrieve patient and drug information and process prescriptions, supports pharmacy operations and inventory, and delivers a positive customer experience. Technicians earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated program and/or any state-required certification or registration.

Requirements

• Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English, except in Puerto Rico.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

• Six months of experience in a retail environment.
• Prior work experience with Walgreens.
• Good math skills for accurately counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
• Good computer skills.
• Knowledge of store inventory control.
• PTCB certification.

Responsibilities

• Assist the pharmacist under direct supervision and in accordance with state, federal, and company requirements.
• Use pharmacy systems to enter and retrieve patient and drug information and process prescriptions accurately.
• Retrieve, count, and pour pharmaceutical drugs; verify medications and check for possible interactions.
• Assist with pharmacy workflow, including scheduling and maintaining workflow.
• Immediately report prescription errors to the pharmacist on duty and follow company error-handling and Quality Improvement Program policies.
• Follow the Walgreen Co. Pharmacy Code of Conduct and Good Faith Dispensing policy.
• Register sales on the assigned cash register and collect and handle cash as required.
• Help customers locate over-the-counter products and resolve questions or issues.
• Handle telephone calls that do not require the pharmacist’s personal attention, including calls to physicians.
• Correct and resubmit manual third-party prescription claims promptly and perform assigned clerical duties.
• Support inventory management by ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing pharmaceutical shipments, and file claims for overages, shortages, order errors, or damaged prescription drugs.
• May assist with clinical services, including collecting and labeling blood or urine samples, and coordinating services with Walgreens clinics and external providers.
• Support relationships with local medical professionals and community health organizations through provider detailing and outreach.
• Help maintain a clean, neat, orderly, and adequately stocked Pharmacy Department.
• Comply with company policies and procedures and maintain respectful coworker relationships.
• Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned.
• Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state-required certification or registration; otherwise, earn PTCB certification as a condition of promotion to senior technician.
• Attend requested training, obtain continuing education credits, and maintain knowledge and skills in healthcare and pharmacy.
• Engage customers and patients by greeting them, offering assistance, answering questions, and modeling customer-service best practices.
• Develop strong relationships with valuable customers.
