About The Position

Walgreens Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technician Apprentices work in a patient-centric pharmacy environment, interacting with customers and developing patient relationships. Under a pharmacist’s direct supervision, the role assists in pharmacy practice and other Pharmacy Department duties in accordance with state and federal regulations and Company policies. The position uses pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions, and provides a distinctive customer experience. Walgreens provides an earn-while-you-learn Pharmacy Technician Training Program recognized by ASHP and the Department of Labor. Training is designed to develop foundational and advanced knowledge, skills, and on-the-job experience, and to guide employees toward PTCB certification and the skills required in pharmacy care. Technicians must earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or applicable state certification or registration requirements; PTCB certification is otherwise required for promotion to senior technician. Duties include prescription processing and filling, workflow support, customer service, cash handling, telephone assistance, claims processing, inventory management, pharmacy maintenance, and support for clinical services. The role also involves continuing education and maintaining knowledge of developments in healthcare and pharmacy.

Requirements

Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English, except in Puerto Rico.
Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.

Nice To Haves

Six months of experience in a retail environment.
Prior work experience with Walgreens.
Good math skills for accurately counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
Good computer skills.
Knowledge of store inventory control.
PTCB certification.

Responsibilities

Assist the pharmacist, under direct supervision, in pharmacy practice and other Pharmacy Department duties in accordance with state and federal regulations and Company policies.
Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions; enter information accurately, retrieve, count, and pour medications, verify medicines, and check for possible interactions.
If PTCB certified, assist with and coach pharmacy technicians in using pharmacy systems and cashiers in operating pharmacy cash registers.
Greet customers and patients, offer assistance with products and services, resolve issues, answer questions, and provide a positive customer experience.
Model customer service best practices and develop strong relationships with valuable customers.
Follow the Walgreen Co. Pharmacy Code of Conduct and Good Faith Dispensing policy.
Assist with pharmacy scheduling and workflow, as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager, Staff Pharmacist, or Store Manager.
Immediately report prescription errors to the pharmacist on duty and follow Company policies and procedures related to pharmacy errors and the Quality Improvement Program.
Register related sales on the assigned cash register and collect and handle cash as required; assist customers in locating over-the-counter products when possible.
Handle telephone calls that do not require the pharmacist’s personal attention, including calls to physicians.
Correct and resubmit manual third-party prescription claims in a timely and efficient manner and perform assigned clerical duties.
Support inventory activities, including ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing pharmaceutical shipments; file claims for overages, shortages, order errors, and damaged prescription-drug goods.
Maintain knowledge of Company asset-protection techniques.
As needed, assist the pharmacist in clinical services, including collecting and properly labeling blood or urine samples, and coordinate clinical services with pharmacy staff, Walgreens healthcare clinics, and external providers.
Assist the Pharmacy Manager and Staff Pharmacist in maintaining relationships with local medical providers and conducting provider outreach to healthcare groups and care facilities.
Help maintain the Pharmacy Department’s supplies, cleanliness, orderliness, and appearance.
Comply with Company policies and procedures and maintain respectful relationships with coworkers.
Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned.
Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state-required certification or registration; otherwise, earn PTCB certification as a condition of promotion to senior technician.
Attend training requested by the Manager, acquire continuing education credits, and maintain knowledge and skills in healthcare and pharmacy.
