About The Position

Walgreens Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technician Apprentices work in a patient-centered pharmacy environment, interacting with customers and building patient relationships. Walgreens provides an “earn while you learn” training program recognized by ASHP and the Department of Labor. The program offers courses, learning activities, resources, and on-the-job experience to prepare participants for Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification and a career in pharmacy care.

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the technician assists in the practice of pharmacy in accordance with state and federal regulations and company policies. The role uses pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions, supports pharmacy operations and customer service, and may assist with clinical services. PTCB-certified technicians may also coach pharmacy technicians in pharmacy systems and cashiers in operating pharmacy registers.

Requirements

• Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English, except in Puerto Rico.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.
• Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state-required certification or registration; PTCB certification is required for promotion to senior technician if not otherwise obtained.

Nice To Haves

• Six months of experience in a retail environment.
• Prior work experience with Walgreens.
• Good math skills for accurately counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
• Good computer skills.
• Knowledge of store inventory control.
• PTCB certification.

Responsibilities

• Assist the pharmacist in the practice of pharmacy and perform other Pharmacy Department duties in accordance with applicable regulations and company policies.
• Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions accurately.
• Engage customers and patients, offer assistance with products and services, resolve issues, answer questions, and develop relationships with valuable customers.
• Model customer-service best practices, including greeting customers, making eye contact, offering proactive help, identifying needs, and assisting customers until satisfied.
• Enter patient and drug information, retrieve, count and pour pharmaceutical drugs, verify medications, and check for possible interactions.
• Assist pharmacists with scheduling and maintaining workflow.
• Immediately report prescription errors to the pharmacist on duty and follow company error-reporting and Quality Improvement Program procedures.
• Follow the Good Faith Dispensing policy during applicable prescription dispensing activities.
• Register sales on the assigned cash register and collect and handle cash as required; help customers locate over-the-counter products when possible.
• Handle telephone calls that do not require the pharmacist’s personal attention, including calls to physicians.
• Correct and resubmit manual third-party prescription claims promptly and perform clerical duties as assigned.
• Support inventory management by ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing pharmaceutical shipments; apply asset-protection procedures and file claims for shipment overages, shortages, order errors, or damaged prescription drugs.
• May assist the pharmacist with clinical services, including collecting and properly labeling blood or urine samples, and coordinate services with pharmacy staff, Walgreens healthcare clinics, and external providers.
• Help maintain relationships with the local medical community through provider outreach and related activities.
• Keep the Pharmacy Department stocked, clean, neat, and orderly.
• Comply with company policies and procedures and maintain respectful relationships with coworkers.
• Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned.
• Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state-required certification or registration; otherwise, earn PTCB certification as a condition of promotion to senior technician.
• Attend training requested by the Manager, acquire continuing education credits, and maintain knowledge and skills in healthcare and pharmacy.
• If PTCB certified, assist with and coach pharmacy technicians in pharmacy systems and cashiers in pharmacy-register operations.
