About The Position

Walgreens Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technician Apprentices work in a patient-centric pharmacy environment, interacting with customers and developing patient relationships. Walgreens provides an “earn while you learn” Pharmacy Technician Training Program recognized by ASHP and the Department of Labor. The program offers courses, learning activities, resources, and on-the-job experience to build foundational and advanced pharmacy skills and prepare participants for Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification.

Under a pharmacist’s direct supervision, the role assists with pharmacy practice and other Pharmacy Department duties in accordance with state and federal regulations and Company policies. It uses pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions, and models a distinctive customer experience. Employees earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or required state certification or registration.

Requirements

• Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English, except in Puerto Rico.
• Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.
• Earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state-required certification or registration; otherwise, earn PTCB certification as a condition of promotion to senior technician.

Nice To Haves

• Six months of experience in a retail environment.
• Prior work experience with Walgreens.
• Good math skills for accurately counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
• Good computer skills.
• Knowledge of store inventory control.
• PTCB certification.

Responsibilities

• Assist the pharmacist in pharmacy practice and other Pharmacy Department duties under direct supervision and in compliance with applicable laws and Company policies.
• Use pharmacy systems to enter patient and drug information and process prescriptions accurately.
• Fill prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring medications, verifying the medicine, and checking for possible interactions.
• Assist pharmacists with scheduling and maintaining workflow.
• Report prescription errors immediately to the pharmacist and comply with related Company policies and the Quality Improvement Program.
• Follow the Good Faith Dispensing policy during applicable prescription dispensing activities.
• Register sales on the assigned cash register and collect and handle cash as required.
• Help customers locate over-the-counter products when possible.
• Handle telephone calls that do not require the pharmacist’s personal attention, including calls to physicians.
• Correct and resubmit manual third-party prescription claims promptly and perform assigned clerical duties.
• Support inventory management, including ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing pharmaceutical shipments; follow asset protection practices and file claims for shipment discrepancies or damaged goods involving prescription drugs.
• May assist the pharmacist with clinical services, including collecting and labeling blood or urine samples, and help coordinate services with Walgreens healthcare clinics and external providers.
• Help maintain relationships with the local medical community through provider outreach and engagement with health groups and care facilities.
• Help keep the Pharmacy Department stocked, clean, neat, and orderly.
• Maintain respectful relationships with coworkers and comply with Company policies and procedures.
• Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned.
• Attend requested training, acquire continuing education credits, and maintain current healthcare and pharmacy knowledge.
• Engage customers and patients, offer assistance, resolve issues, answer questions, and model customer-service best practices.
• Develop strong relationships with valuable customers.
