About The Position

Under the direction of a pharmacist and in coordination with other technicians, this position prepares unit dose and intravenous medications for dispensing to patients. It involves making scheduled deliveries to nursing units to deliver medications while ensuring medication security requirements are met. The role also includes assisting pharmacists with medication order entry, maintaining medication stock levels, and demonstrating teamwork. The technician must participate in continuing education to meet annual competency requirements and ongoing training to develop skills in other pharmacy areas. Compliance with all hospital and pharmacy department rules and regulations is mandatory. PTCB certification must be completed within 9 months of hire, unless already in place, and maintained throughout employment.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Active OH Board of Pharmacy Certified Pharmacy Technician registration
  • PTCB/NHA certification
  • 1 year of relevant experience required
  • Must complete PTCB certification within 9 months of hire date, unless such is in place upon hire.
  • All technicians must maintain a current PTCB certification throughout employment in order to work as pharmacy technician at OSU Medical Center department of Pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares unit dose and intravenous medications for dispensing to patients.
  • Makes scheduled deliveries to appointed nursing units to deliver medications to patients.
  • Ensures that the department meets medication security requirements.
  • Assists pharmacists with medication order entry into the pharmacy computer system.
  • Maintains stock levels of medications to avoid delays in service to patients.
  • Demonstrates ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Participates in continuing educational opportunities to meet annual competency requirements.
  • Participates in continual training opportunities provided by the department to develop ongoing skills in other areas of the pharmacy.
  • Complies with all rules and regulations of the hospital and pharmacy department.
  • Supports initiatives of area supervisors and managers.
  • Preparation and packaging of medications.
  • Distribution of medications, supplies and equipment.
  • Maintaining proper inventory levels.
  • Ensuring medications are in date and secure.
  • Keeping appropriate records and documentation.
  • Submitting patient charges/credits.
