About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician II position is responsible for assisting in the various activities of the pharmacy department, including those related to preparing and dispensing drugs. The Pharmacy Technician II functions in accordance with Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and guidelines as well as applicable state and federal regulations.

Requirements

  • Medical terminology and abbreviation common to prescribing and dispensing.
  • Drug names and classification.
  • Medication order and prescription interpretation.
  • Basic pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Federal and State laws governing the practice of pharmacy and the distribution of controlled and non-controlled substances.
  • Medication error prevention methods.
  • Aseptic technique and preparation procedures for sterile dosage forms.
  • Good written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a team player.
  • Adaptable and resourceful, able to cope with change and develop alternative solutions to problems.
  • Computer use, including rudimentary skills such as keyboard and mouse, ability to utilize software programs, ability to utilize email, ability to utilize internet.
  • Excellent typing and spelling skills.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in the practice of retail and/or institutional pharmacy.
  • Successful completion of the Pharmacy Technician I probationary period.
  • General basic chemistry, arithmetic, reading, and writing abilities.
  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Florida Department of Health.
  • Graduate from an approved pharmacy technician training program.
  • Possess a high school diploma or certificate of equivalency.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and maintains appropriate knowledge and understanding of the care and services provided by Community Hospice, including values, policies, and procedures.
  • Follows established departmental rules, procedures, policies, quality-improvement objectives, and environmental, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Enters orders into computerized patient profile for pharmacist verification.
  • Maintains patient demographic and medication profiles in computer systems.
  • Provides non-clinical drug information to patients, nurses, and physicians.
  • Keeps files, records, and communication organized.
  • Answers telephone calls within three (3) rings.
  • Repackages, labels, handles, and stores pharmaceuticals.
  • Measures and mixes to compound and reconstitute medication.
  • Packages medication orders for delivery.
  • Uses and maintains equipment and facilities.
  • Orders drugs from wholesaler and receives drugs into pharmacy stock.
  • Maintains Schedule II drug usage log and inventory count.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of medical terminology, drug names and classification, medication order and prescription interpretation, basic pharmaceutical calculations, federal and state laws governing pharmacy practice, medication error prevention methods, and aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain input of a minimum of 80% of the average number of prescriptions per hour demonstrated by the Lead Technician with no error.
  • Performs aseptic compounding of sterile parenteral admixtures.
  • Triages orders, determines priorities, and processes orders appropriately.
  • Notifies the pharmacist and management of any unusual situations, occurrences, conditions, or complaints related to drugs.
  • Facilitates the safe and efficient transport of medications, drug-delivery devices, and supplies from the pharmacy to inpatient facilities and patients.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently with regard to the functions and tasks for the operation of the pharmacy.
  • Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees.
  • Interacts effectively with other members of the health care team.
  • Operates technology (computers, EyeCon, Smart Cabinet) in accordance with policy, procedures, and manufacturing instructions.
  • Performs essential functions related to opening and closing the pharmacy.
  • Uses appropriate telephone communication skills and effectively communicates with patients, nurses, physicians, and other co-workers.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
