About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician II assists the Pharmacist and other hospital staff in providing quality care to patients by applying knowledge and training of medication distribution. This role involves daily assignments such as processing medication orders, gathering and dispensing medications, filling prescription orders, and delivering drugs to assigned units. The position also requires maintaining daily pharmacy logs, assisting with inventory control, answering phones, and preparing IV medications in accordance with USP 797/800 regulations. Additionally, the Pharmacy Technician II is responsible for ensuring IV rooms are cleaned and documented, obtaining and entering medication history for patients into the EHR, and identifying/reporting any medication history inaccuracies or safety concerns to the pharmacist. Training new employees and pharmacy students may also be part of the responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the State of Texas Board of Pharmacy
  • Certificate of completion of a nationally recognized IV Certification Program OR Certificate of completion of UMCHS Pharmacy Medication Reconciliation Program (if hired specifically for pharmacy med rec position, Must complete certificate within 90 days of hire into the role)
  • Demonstrated combination of training and experience that requires concentration, accuracy, and discipline
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology

Responsibilities

  • Provide training to new employees and/or pharmacy students as directed by pharmacists or supervisor
  • Accurately process medication orders and requests, gather and dispense medications, fill prescription orders
  • Deliver drugs to assigned units
  • Maintain daily pharmacy logs
  • Assist in inventory control, answer phones, and other assigned duties by the Pharmacist and/or Pharmacy Supervisor
  • Prepare IV medications in accordance with USP 797/800 regulations
  • Ensure IV rooms are cleaned and documented in accordance with USP 797/800
  • Obtain and enter medication history for patient into electronic format within EHR
  • Ensure accuracy of medication history for patient
  • Identify and report to pharmacist any noted inaccuracies, duplicates, or other safety concerns generated from medication history
  • All other assigned duties related to Pharmacy Compliance
