About The Position

Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, supervisor, and/or director/manager of pharmacy services, the Pharmacy Technician II - Inpatient performs a variety of technical and clerical duties for the hospital-wide unit dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture program. This position is responsible to maintain confidential reports, enter and retrieve data utilizing the computer system, prepare intravenous medication, assists in all aspects of labeling and preparation of medication, assists with management of inventory including receiving and storing medication as well as preparation and delivery of narcotics, data collection related to medication center review and quality improvement, assists in monitoring and management of emergency carts through the hospital, fill automated medication dispensing system with a supply of unit dose medications, procure, and fill requests for pharmaceutical supplies and deliver supplies to nursing units.

Responsibilities

  • Attends departmental staff meetings, daily huddles, daily hand-offs and all other departmental communications to remain informed of departmental and organizational updates to process, policy, procedure, and other updates.
  • Fills, delivers, replenishes, and accurately maintains medications and supplies for automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), patient-specific medication orders, nursing units, perioperative areas, and ancillary departments in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Prepares sterile compounded products, intravenous admixtures, and syringes using approved aseptic techniques and established quality and safety standards; inspects finished products for accuracy, quality, clarity, and proper labeling prior to pharmacist verification.
  • Assembles materials, generate labels and worklists, and prepares medications for pharmacist verification and distribution.; pre-packages, labels, and prepares unit-dose medications, bulk manufactured products, and other pharmaceutical products as permitted and directed by pharmacists and departmental procedures.
  • Maintains pharmacy and clean room inventory through stock replenishment, expiration-date monitoring, stock rotation, recycling, supply ordering, and adherence to sterile compounding and infection prevention standards.
  • Prepares, distributes, transports, documents, and maintains accountability for controlled substances in compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and departmental procedures.
  • Receives, unpacks, transports, stores, stocks, distributes, and disposes of hazardous medications, including chemotherapy agents, in accordance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and safety standards.
  • Performs authorized technician-check-technician verification activities for automated dispensing cabinet (ADC) restocking and inventory management.
  • Conducts monthly nursing unit and department inspections; monitors medication storage conditions, expiration dates, and product integrity; inspects medications for barcode scanning functionality and compliance with unit-dose packaging requirements, including one-tablet-per-package standards; reports unusual occurrences and support compliance with medication safety standards, regulatory requirements, and departmental policies.
  • Processes medication charges and credits, maintain workload statistics and required records, generate reports and labels, and complete documentation accurately and timely.
  • Maintains pharmacy and work areas in a clean, organized, and compliant condition through routine cleaning, disinfection, and equipment maintenance.
  • Collaborates effectively with pharmacists, nursing staff, and other healthcare team members to ensure safe, accurate, and timely medication distribution and pharmaceutical services throughout the organization.
