Pharmacy Technician I
About The Position
Under the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, the Pharmacy Technician I performs routine support tasks essential to pharmacy department operations while following established policies and procedures. Duties include preparing and distributing unit-dose medications, outpatient prescriptions, and stock orders while maintaining safe handling and medication integrity. Assignments may be throughout the central pharmacy and designated specialized pharmacy areas. The role may also include technical training responsibilities and participation in departmental projects.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Required state Pharmacy Technician license.
- 1–2 years of experience required.
- Perform intermediate mathematical calculations associated with preparing non-sterile, extemporaneously manufactured pharmaceutical products and other medication doses.
- Follow applicable state and federal controlled substance regulations.
- Continuously improve skills for area-specific technology, including robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems.
- Read, interpret, and follow complex verbal and written instructions to prepare medications accurately in a sterile environment.
- Familiarity with pharmacy practice settings, legal requirements and limitations, prescription information and calculations, drug identification and generic equivalents, drug manufacturing, packaging and labeling information, and proper drug handling and storage practices.
Nice To Haves
- Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is preferred.
- Previous hospital-related experience, formal training, or certification from a pharmacy technician training program is desired.
Responsibilities
- Perform pharmaceutical dosage calculations needed to prepare applicable extemporaneous dosage forms under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
- Follow safety requirements and organizational policies and regulatory requirements for handling non-hazardous medications.
- May prepare compounded sterile products using aseptic technique, distribute and transport controlled substances under appropriate state controls, or maintain code cart inventory.
- Assist with training Pharmacy Technician Trainees.
- Prepare and distribute unit-dose medications, outpatient prescriptions, and stock orders while maintaining safe handling and medication integrity.
- Participate in departmental projects as assigned.
