The Pharmacy Technician I assists licensed pharmacists in technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of medications. This role involves accurately selecting, preparing, and labeling medications, including hazardous drugs and controlled substances, and assisting with medication distribution tasks. The technician will also handle phone calls, assist with pharmacy procurement and inventory control, and perform documentation for controlled substances. Responsibilities may include nonsterile compounding, sterile IV admixture, inspecting medication storage areas, and completing medication admission histories. The role also involves seeking additional duties, potentially participating in quality improvement initiatives, assisting in training other technicians, and adhering to all organizational policies and legal standards. Additional duties include obtaining and recording patient information, data entry, insurance verification, label generation, cashiering, and developing competence in third-party billing. The technician must demonstrate age-appropriate patient care knowledge and skills. In some cases, they may obtain immunization certification and perform immunizations under supervision, or operate a vehicle to deliver medications and supplies.
