This role assists licensed pharmacists in technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of medications. The Pharmacy Technician I accurately selects, prepares, and labels medications, including hazardous drugs and controlled substances. They also assist with medication distribution tasks, screen phone calls, and manage daily pharmacy procurement, inventory control, and outdate checking. Responsibilities may include completing documentation for controlled substances, performing nonsterile compounding and sterile IV admixture following USP standards and aseptic technique, and inspecting medication storage areas. The position may also involve completing medication admission histories, seeking additional duties when work is complete, and supporting departmental quality improvement initiatives. There is potential to assist in training other pharmacy technicians and extenders. The role requires adherence to all organizational policies, legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards, and supporting area leaders with goals and assignments. Additional duties include obtaining and recording patient information, data entry, insurance verification, label generation, cashiering, and developing competence in third-party billing. The technician must demonstrate age-appropriate patient care knowledge and skills. In some cases, they may obtain immunization certification and administer immunizations under pharmacist supervision. The role may also involve operating an Advocate Health-owned vehicle to deliver medications and supplies.
