This job delivers medications to designated areas under close supervision and according to detailed instructions, policies and procedures. This job refills and maintains automated dispensing machines; prices manual medication orders, inventories and reorders stock in the pharmacy; enters data into a computer system and prints labels as necessary; reviews physician's orders and enters patient medication orders into the pharmacy order entry system; identifies problems with orders and notifies pharmacist or nursing when orders need clarification or to request patient information (i.e. allergies, height, weight) when needed; accurately compounds IV Admixtures and other assigned preparations utilizing aseptic technique and proper pharmaceutical procedures; maintains stock in all assigned areas including the IV room and other pharmacy areas; performs related clerical duties including typing, answering phone, filing and greeting nurses and physicians at the Pharmacy window.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Current Pharmacy Technician Certification issued by the Board of Pharmacy in the state of practice
  • Computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
  • Proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Skills to operate standard pharmacy and office equipment
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to travel throughout and between facilities.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule (e.g. 24/7, weekend, holiday, on call availability).
  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • May be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies problems with orders and notifies pharmacist or nursing when orders need clarification or to request patient information (i.e. allergies, height, weight) when needed.
  • Accurately compounds IV Admixtures and other assigned preparations utilizing aseptic technique and proper pharmaceutical procedures.
  • Maintains stock in all assigned areas including the IV room and other pharmacy areas.
  • Performs related clerical duties including typing, answering phone, filing and greeting nurses and physicians at the Pharmacy window.
  • Ensures customer service and teamwork while conducting responsibilities.
  • Fills medication orders, charges/credits all medication, stocks, delivers, and inspects assigned areas.
  • Prepares IV admixtures and other extemporaneous compounds and enters TPN orders into the computer system.
  • Maintains competency in professional growth and responsibilities.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Remains knowledgeable on current federal, state and local laws, accreditation standards or regulatory agency requirements that apply to the assigned area of responsibility and ensures compliance with all such laws, regulations and standards.
  • Reports any known or suspected unethical or questionable behaviors or conduct; patient/employee safety, patient privacy, and/or other compliance-related concerns.
