The Pharmacy Buyer is responsible for pharmacy purchasing, inventory management and ensuring an adequate inventory of medications and other pharmaceutical products are maintained. The buyer monitors and manages drug shortages so that adequate stock is maintained and that suitable alternatives are available. The Buyer ensures that pharmacy complies with purchasing contracts and that equally efficacious medications are purchased at the lowest cost while remaining within monthly budgetary limitations. Maintains a current up to date knowledge of the facility’s Group Purchasing Organization and contracts. Actively engages in cost savings initiatives. Manages the purchasing system and ensures proper controls, safeguards and audit trails are in place. Assists the Director and Manager in all aspects of purchasing and supply chain functions. Follows departmental policies and procedures, ethical and professional standards, as well as state and federal requirements in acquisition, storage, and return or destruction of medications. Purchases pharmaceuticals, including placing orders, invoicing, and inventory control. Establishes, implements, maintains, and manages a pharmacy purchasing system. Understands 340B implications and ensures compliance with the 340B Drug Pricing Program. Understands GPO purchasing and ensures contract compliance. Manages associates interacting with the purchasing system. Keeps abreast of alternate sources for medications and addresses drug shortages.
