About The Position

Public Health – Seattle & King County is seeking a Term-Limited Temporary or Special Duty Pharmacy Technician (Pharmacy Billing Specialist) to join its team within the Jail Health Services Pharmacy Department. This position combines traditional pharmacy technician responsibilities with specialized pharmacy billing and reimbursement functions. Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician Billing Specialist supports medication distribution, prescription processing, patient profile maintenance, insurance billing, prior authorizations, and claims management activities. The incumbent serves as a liaison between pharmacy operations and reimbursement processes, helping ensure timely access to medications, accurate billing, and compliance with applicable federal, state, county, and departmental regulations. This position collaborates with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, nursing staff, project managers, and insurance representatives to support both patient care and pharmacy operations within a correctional healthcare setting. This TLT position offers a hybrid work environment and opportunities to work across multiple pharmacy locations while gaining experience in correctional health, pharmacy operations, medication access, and pharmacy billing.

Requirements

  • Washington State Board of Pharmacy Technician License at time of hire.
  • Must pass DAJD Clearance and Public Health Background Check.
  • Knowledge of drug names, strength, dosage forms, generic equivalents, and storage requirements.
  • Knowledge of the legal requirements of a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy practices and procedures.
  • Strong understanding of pharmacy insurance, and medical terminology.
  • Basic mathematics calculation skills.
  • Organization skills and analytical skills to resolve billing issues.
  • Time management skills.
  • Strong communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Skill in working in a team environment.

  • Proficiency in Pharmacy Management Systems (PMS) and Microsoft Office.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in healthcare, retail, pharmacy, billing or similar fields.

Responsibilities

  • Assist pharmacists in processing medication orders, preparing prescriptions, and maintaining accurate patient medication profiles.
  • Enter and update prescription, insurance, and billing information in pharmacy information systems while ensuring data accuracy and completeness.
  • Accurately interpret prescription information, including medication names, strengths, dosage forms, directions for use, and generic equivalents.
  • Support medication dispensing workflows in accordance with pharmacy policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain pharmacy records and documentation related to medication dispensing activities.
  • Process, submit, monitor, and reconcile pharmacy claims to third-party insurance carriers to ensure accurate and timely reimbursement.
  • Verify patient insurance eligibility, benefits, and coverage details.
  • Enter and update insurance and billing information in pharmacy information systems.
  • Review billing records, remittance information, and claim payments to identify discrepancies and ensure accurate adjudication and payment posting.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve denied or rejected claims; identify root causes and implement corrective actions to improve claim acceptance rates.
  • Maintain records related to claim adjustments, rebilling activities, and reimbursement actions following medication dispensing or administration.
  • Coordinate medication access activities, including obtaining insurance information, submitting and tracking prior authorization requests, and communicating with healthcare providers regarding coverage requirements.
  • Research formulary alternatives and coverage restrictions to support continuity of patient care.
  • Work with pharmacists and providers to identify covered therapeutic alternatives when insurance barriers arise.
  • Collaborate with nursing and healthcare staff to support medication continuity-of-care activities related to patient release and re-entry into the community.
  • Support pharmacy initiatives designed to improve medication access, adherence, and patient outcomes within the correctional healthcare environment.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects related to pharmacy operations, medication access, billing accuracy, and reimbursement processes.
  • Assist with audits involving pharmacy records, billing documentation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain competency in pharmacy technician practices, billing procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Adhere to all applicable federal and state regulations, pharmacy laws, Public Health policies, and departmental procedures.
