About The Position

The individual in this position will assist in preparing, packaging, delivering, and charging of medications, under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Position duties include the following activities: fill and label medications, stock medications into pharmacy inventory, restock automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), maintain adequate medication stock levels and proper storage of medications, deliver medications to patient care areas, attend to medication requests and phone calls, assist in Pharmacy quality assurance activities, comply with state and federal regulatory requirements, Joint Commission standards and Tenet and hospital policies and procedures, and assist pharmacists and supervisors in performing various duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED or equivalent training required.
  • Licensed in the State of Arizona as a Pharmacy Technician in training.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with occasional periods of above average pressure.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be willing to work in all areas of the pharmacy services as assigned.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with team members required.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion or current student of a certified pharmacy technician training program and/or experience working under a pharmacist in retail, hospital or other pharmacy environments.
  • Licensed in the State of Arizona as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Pharmacy technician certification.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately fill medication orders with correct strength, dosage form, and quantity in a timely manner.
  • Assure all medications are checked by a pharmacist prior to dispensing.
  • Respond appropriately to requests for STAT orders, routine orders, department requests, and ADC stock out bulletins.
  • Refill emergency crash carts, boxes, and kits accurately.
  • Accurately stock ADCs in a timely manner.
  • Prepackage and label oral medications and extemporaneous preparations.
  • Prepare non-sterile compounded products accurately and consistent with hospital policies and procedures (USP 795).
  • Complete monthly medication area inspections as assigned.
  • Maintain quality assurance logs with proper documentation and notify Supervisor of any deviations from standards.
  • Adhere to pharmacy technician operational workflow and delivery schedule.
  • Follow proper process for handling of controlled substances and report any variances to Supervisor or pharmacist-in-charge.
  • Ensure patient accounts are properly charged.
  • Acts as an agent, and under the supervision, of the facility medical director while performing medication management related activities at a remote site commonly owned and operated by the Hospital.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Assesses and prioritizes workload.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Shares responsibility for ordering and stocking medication and keeping the department clean.
  • Maintains a calm demeanor during busy or crisis situations.
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment to protect from exposure to chemical, radiation and infectious hazards.
  • Identifies, proposes solutions and assists in implementation of ideas for improvement in patient care and departmental / hospital operations.
  • Participates in the successful implementation of change.
  • Decreases waste in medication.
  • Participates in department QI as requested.
