About The Position

This role involves assisting the Pharmacist with various duties to ensure the efficient and accurate dispensing of medications within a hospital setting. Key responsibilities include managing patient medications, maintaining inventory, handling drug recalls, and ensuring compliance with pharmacy protocols.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of use and dispensing of medications.
  • Knowledge and ability to read and comprehend pyxis fill lists and reports relating to medications and workflow.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Pharmacist.
  • Answer telephones politely and professionally, directing inquiries and relaying messages accurately.
  • Make rounds to nursing unit Pyxis MedStations to deliver medication.
  • Prepare individual medication doses for pharmacist verification.
  • Retrieve, review, and replenish supplies of medications in Emergency Supply boxes.
  • Retrieve patients’ own medications from the Nursing office daily.
  • Label, record, and designate patients’ own medications.
  • Provide patients’ own medication bags to nurses prior to discharge.
  • Alert the director of pharmacy of any patients’ own medications not properly safeguarded and labeled by nursing staff.
  • Maintain "Patient’s Own Medications" for return to patient/family.
  • Record and check on the list any patients’ own medications for each discharge.
  • Accurately maintain Pyxis MedStations, including refilling lists, loading/unloading medications, recording expiration dates and quantities, correcting "drawer failures", and notifying the Pyxis help desk.
  • Manage inventory by checking in orders, rotating stock, removing medications expiring within two months, and maintaining a log of all deliveries.
  • Handle drug recalls by checking inventory for recalled lot numbers, notifying the Director of Pharmacy, packaging and mailing recalled drugs, and logging onto the Cardinal Wholesaler Drug Recall Notification website daily.
  • Manage discharge responsibilities, including checking pharmacy email for updates, contacting social workers, reporting trends that prevent timely data entry, and maintaining an accurate record of patients’ own medications.
  • Retrieve, maintain, and deliver Emergency Boxes to and from the Nursing Office and Medication rooms, checking for expiration dates and replenishment needs.
  • Conduct monthly Nursing Unit Inspections, documenting the condition of medication rooms and reporting discrepancies or concerns to the Director of Pharmacy.
  • Maintain an orderly, organized, and clean workspace in the Pharmacy Department.
  • Attend Pharmacy Staff Meetings and in-services.
  • Act as a liaison between the pharmacy department and other hospital departments, maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor.
  • Monitor Pharmacy department refrigerator and room temperatures and maintain logs.
  • Perform filing and other administrative duties as requested by the Director of Pharmacy.
  • Prepare and label Unit Dose Medications from Bulk Containers accurately.
  • Assist the Director of Pharmacy in administrative tasks, documentation, and creating/maintaining necessary forms.
