About The Position

Texas Oncology is looking for a Pharmacy Technician (IV Admixture) to join their team at the San Marcos location, with occasional coverage for the Kyle location. This is a full-time position with a Monday through Friday schedule, rotating between 8am-4:30pm or 8:30am-5:00pm, and does not require weekend, call, or major holiday work. This role involves performing technical, nonjudgmental aspects of medication preparation under direct supervision of a physician in a clinic admixture room. With minimal supervision, the technician is responsible for record keeping and inventory control. Tasks are subject to sequential or final verification by a registered nurse or pharmacist. The position supports the US Oncology Compliance Program and adheres to its Code of Ethics and Business Standards. Specific state laws may regulate compounding or mixing responsibilities, potentially prohibiting certain incumbents from these tasks.

Requirements

  • Level 1: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Level 1: Entry level to three years experience in a pharmacy.
  • Level 2 (in addition to level 1 requirements): Minimum three to five years experience in a pharmacy with I.V. skills.
  • Level Sr (in addition to level 1 and 2 requirements): Minimum five to seven years experience in a pharmacy with I.V. skills.

Nice To Haves

  • I.V. certification preferred (for Level 2).
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate or State Pharmacy Board requirement recommended (for Level 2).
  • Oncology background preferred or extensive I.V. preparation experience (for Level Sr).
  • Completion of an ASHP accredited program or community college based program recommended (for Level Sr).

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the preparation of medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under supervision of a physician.
  • Checks all orders for completeness of information. Verifies patient information and proper physician authorization.
  • Under direct supervision, admixes drugs as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner as per department guidelines, and preparing all drugs within OSHA guidelines and interoffice guidelines.
  • Calculates correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
  • Assists in counting controlled drugs weekly and maintain records.
  • Properly disposes all materials used when mixing chemo or non-chemo IVs.
  • Assists in cleaning hoods daily checking drugs monthly for outdates and other quality assurance activities as assigned.
  • Assists in keeping accurate temperature logs, accurate logs on all protocol drugs and patient assistance drugs.
  • Maintains proper control documentation of medications including lot numbers.
  • Provide support with inventory control of medications.
  • Prepares labels.
  • Files and prepares billing.
  • Basic data entry into department automation.
  • Ordering of medication and supplies as directed.
  • Assist with required cleaning and maintenance of the admix area and the pharmacy department in general to minimize particle counts and improve overall sanitation.
