About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician will perform assigned tasks, within their scope, necessary for the operation of the Pharmacy. Requirements

  • Current California Pharmacy Technician or Intern Pharmacist registration
  • Six months previous relevant pharmacy tech experience.
  • Knowledge as well as demonstrated competency of IV compounding using aseptic technique.
  • Knowledge and training in sterile technique, drug incompatibilities and stabilities, math computations, weights, volumes, concentrations, dilutions.
  • Knowledge and training in and is responsible for accurate and aseptic preparation of cytotoxic preparations.
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned tasks, within their scope, necessary for the operation of the Pharmacy.
  • Accurately and aseptically prepare, label, and compound total parenteral nutrition, piggybacks, large volume intravenous mixtures, epidural preparations, and other medications.
  • Accurately and aseptically prepare and label unit dose medication for neonatal and pediatric patients.
  • Thoroughly clean, decontaminate, calibrate, and document all clean room equipment as per established procedures and policies.
  • Accurately and aseptically prepare cytotoxic preparations.
  • Assist pharmacist in providing effective, appropriate, and safe pharmacy services.
  • Recognize situations that exceed technician authority (e.g. drug information, bypassing pharmacist checks) and refer to pharmacist for timely resolution.
  • Obtain pharmacist verification prior to distributing medications to areas.
  • Answer telephone in a courteous, professional manner.
  • Provide timely follow up on requests.
  • Accurately fill medication orders per pharmacist request, or following arranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Assist in stock control.
  • Ensure orders received for wholesaler for outside sources have recognized barcodes.
  • Send an emergency order to wholesaler.
  • Communicate low stock items to buyers.
  • Prepare orders for offsite areas.
  • Prepare returns to wholesaler.
  • Assist with inventory stocking, removing expired medication, rotating stock, overstock orders, assuring correct medication storage requirements are met, and monitoring usage.
  • Accurately repackage medications utilizing labeling and policy standards.
  • Ensure log sheets are consistently accurate and complete.
  • Accurately fill standard medication trays and boxes and enter accurate expiration dates, if applicable to assigned work site.
  • Accurately load and refill automated drug delivery cabinets (i.e. Pyxis MedStations).
  • Utilize scanning technology, if applicable to assigned work site.
  • Promptly report any defective equipment to IT.
  • Ensure SALAD medications are not in close proximity.
  • Accurately input patient charges and credits into billing systems as instructed, if applicable to assigned work site.
  • Deliver or assure delivery of medications to a nursing station in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Perform rounds as assigned to check for unused or discontinued medications.
  • Empty return bins as assigned.
  • Consistently document refrigerator temps as part of established policy and procedures.
  • Maintain and update logs, crash cart list and communication as required, if applicable to assigned work site.
  • Maintain records, generate reports, lists, labels as required.
  • Receive medication orders and scan medications into inventory, if applicable to assigned work site.
  • Ensure stock is rotated when adding to stock.
  • Inspect medication storage areas according to procedures.
  • Consistently document completion of assigned expiration area.
  • Self-report on medication errors.
  • Participate in Pharmacy staff meetings.
  • Guide, direct, and assist in training new staff.
  • Provide support of medication related regulatory, quality, and safety work.
  • Reconcile and file controlled medication records per established procedures.
  • Accurately load and refill controlled medications in Pyxis Medstations.
  • Ensure ample stock is located in C2 Safe and Medstations.
  • Rotate medications as appropriate to minimize expirations.
  • Accurately repackage controlled medications utilizing labeling and packaging policy standards.
  • Process returned waste of controlled medications through an established reconciliation process.
  • Ensure compliance with quality assurance processes (i.e. weekly narcotic inventory, pyxis vs C2 compare reports, destruction of patient's own medications after 90 days etc).
  • Coordinate the return of expired controlled medications to the reverse distributor.
  • Coordinate the return of incorrect or damaged items.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
