About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician II supports pharmacy operations, assists with medication preparation and distribution, and contributes to pharmaceutical care delivery. The Pharmacy Technician II Processes and fills prescriptions (retail, mail order, specialty, infusion). Packages and ships medications using delivery services. Prepares anesthesia trays, narcotic boxes, and floor stock. Performs sterile IV admixture and non-sterile compounding per USP guidelines. Repackages medications into unit-of-use formats. Maintains compounding equipment and documentation. Orders, receives, and stores medications and supplies. Evaluates backorders and assist with shortage resolution. Maintains cost-accounting records and inventory levels. Monitors controlled substance usage and reconcile discrepancies. Maintains pharmacy records for regulatory compliance. Reviews medication error and adverse drug reaction reports. Supports medication safety committees and reporting systems. Support medication access and affordability through patient advocacy, financial coordination, and assistance program facilitation. Manage inventory, billing, and regulatory compliance across multiple pharmacy sites and clinical departments. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely medication delivery, accurate documentation, and high-quality patient service. Duties listed above represent a general scope of responsibilities. Actual tasks may vary depending on the work site (e.g., Retail Pharmacy, Pharmacy Supply, or Carilion Medical Center). Tier assignment will be determined at the time of hire based on the candidate’s experience as a pharmacy technician and experience in relevant practice setting.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • 1 to 2 years of pharmacy experience required.
  • Registration with the Virginia Department of Health Professionals required.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certified Board Certification relevant to work area is required within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be able to maintain familiarity with a large number (1000-2000) of medications and focused on attention to detail/accuracy.
  • Must be customer service oriented.
  • Requires knowledge and use of general office equipment and procedures, including computer/keyboard.
  • Must be able to solve simple mathematical and logistical problems in the work environment.
  • Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician training course is preferred.
  • Successful completion of Pharmacy Service Line competencies within 6 months of hire.
