About The Position

The pharmacy student intern will assist the pharmacist/technicians in providing pharmaceutical care to the hospital’s patients. The scope varies from performing technician duties to working under the direction of a licensed pharmacist in accordance with applicable state and federal laws. Technician work includes preparation and packaging of unit dose medications (oral, injectable, topical, rectal, inhaled, ophthalmic, otic), delivering medications to nursing units, restocking satellite med stations (pyxis), medication reconciliation interviews, and triaging phone calls. Under the direct supervision of a clinical pharmacist, the student intern will work in several different pharmacy satellite locations. Duties here will include pharmacokinetic dosing of antibiotics, dosing of warfarin, full medication profile reviews, patient counseling, renal dosing of medications, high risk medication assessments, pain regimen monitoring, post-fall reviews, anticoagulation therapy management, diabetes monitoring, discussing patient specific therapy with nurses/providers/patients, and participation with the nutrition support team in dosing of TPN’s. The interns will also be called upon to create an end-of summer presentation each year to give to pharmacy staff.

Requirements

  • Must be accepted to an accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Ideally eligible for New York State Board of Pharmacy Intern license.
  • Completed 1st year of professional study (though pre-professional students will be considered).

Responsibilities
