About The Position

This role supports pharmacy operations by facilitating medication procurement, managing technology, obtaining medication histories, and assisting patients with medication assistance programs. The specialist will work in a hospital environment, ensuring proper medication handling, inventory management, and troubleshooting automated dispensing systems. They will also recover medications for indigent patients, manage patient assistance applications, and serve as a liaison between physicians, patients, and pharmaceutical companies. Additionally, the role involves patient education, resolving application rejections, and maintaining competency in pharmacy processes. In the Home+/Outpatient Infusion environment, the specialist will prepare patient paperwork, enter data, verify insurance, follow up on claims, assist with billing, and facilitate communication between various stakeholders. They will also act as a computer super user and assist pharmacists and leadership with projects.

Requirements

High School Diploma/GED Equivalent
Technician Registration - South Dakota Board of Pharmacy within 30 days of hire
Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - National Healthcare Association (NHA)
1+ years of Pharmaceutical Experience
Ability to work assigned schedules and hours as determined by the department.

Responsibilities

Facilitate pharmacy procurement, knowledge of technology and automated equipment, obtain medication histories, or initiate application processes on behalf of patients for medication assistance programs.
Receive, process, store, and enter medications into the carousel.
Manage Hazardous Drug handling, including receiving, processing, and storage.
Create and send daily orders to the wholesaler.
Monitor medication inventory to ensure appropriate expiration dating.
Perform annual inventory duties.
Operate and troubleshoot automated technology such as Automated Dispensing Cabinets, carousels, compounders, packagers, and printers.
Be available after hours to assist with emergency orders.
Recover medications administered or dispensed to indigent patients who are uninsured/underinsured.
Manage and process applications to pharmaceutical manufacturers' Patient Assistance Programs.
Build relationships and act as a liaison to physicians, patients, and pharmaceutical companies regarding program systems and processes.
Monitor and track the value of medications recovered for billing and reporting.
Routinely visit key contacts within the health system to ensure high-level service and assist in program participation.
Educate physicians, patients, and drug companies on program mission, guidelines, requirements, and appropriate referral.
Provide extensive patient education/counseling to determine eligibility for assistance.
Identify and resolve rejected applications, including accessing comparable drug regimens/managing the application process.
Assist in the pharmacy to maintain competency with pharmacy processes and workflow.
Maintain Tech-Check-Tech validation and perform those duties regularly.
Participate in department committees as assigned.
Prepare patient paperwork and enter all patient data correctly, including demographic, physician, diagnosis, and payer information at intake.
Enter data into the computer system based on customer and referral interview.
Perform thorough verification of insurance and maintain knowledge of payer guidelines.
Conduct timely follow-up of claims as needed.
Assist the pharmacy staff accountant with billing, accounts receivable, and end-of-month processes.
Facilitate communication between nursing caregivers, physicians, referral sources, community partners, and other departments.
Demonstrate proficiency in operating various pharmacy computer systems.
Function as a department computer super user.
Assist pharmacists in the preparation and distribution of medications.
Assist pharmacy leadership in various projects and tasks as directed.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
