About The Position

The Pharmacy Intern is responsible for assisting with the refill and prior authorization process in accordance with organizational policies and procedures. The Pharmacy Intern uses technical skills, education, experience, and interpersonal skills to meet organizational needs and priorities. This individual should be flexible and adaptable to meet changing priorities of the organization and fulfill other duties and projects as assigned. Requirements

  • Medical terminology, brand and generic names of medications, general pharmacy terminology
  • Ability to understand both metric and avoirdupois measures
  • Knowledge of appropriate dispensing amounts for prescriptions in a measurement format anticipated by the pharmacy
  • Knowledge of common quantity limited or step-edited medications and strategies to manage these barriers
  • A general understanding of which medications may be preferred or required prior to coverage of medications that commonly require prior authorization
  • Familiarity with cost burden of different classes of medications
  • Familiarity with local prescription insurance coverage benefit designs.
  • Understanding of Medicare coverage as it pertains to medications, including an ability to distinguish coverage of a medication under Medicare Part B versus Part D
  • Good understanding of controlled substance dispensing law
  • Ability to identify and triage medication priorities/emergencies
  • Effectively interacts with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals
  • Ability to work independently and flex priorities based on the needs of the department
  • Proficiency with computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, and web-based applications)
  • Must be a professional pharmacy student in years 2 through 4 (P2-P4)
  • Rhode Island State Board of Pharmacy Intern license in good standing required

Responsibilities

  • Transmits refill authorizations of non-controlled medications and durable medical equipment supplies (under the auspices of the prescriber) in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Assists with medication prior authorization submission by reviewing insurance formularies, the patient’s electronic health record, and when appropriate, completing third party authorization forms.
  • Tracks prior authorization outcomes and updates providers, patients, and pharmacies of prior authorization status.
  • Uploads medication-related documents into the electronic health record, as needed.
  • Communicates effectively on the status of refill or prior authorization requests through the electronic health record or in person. Conversations and work performed are succinctly and accurately documented in the record.
  • Works directly with the patient’s pharmacy and/or pharmacy benefit management company to resolve prescription-related issues.
  • Maintains and enhances professional expertise through appropriate education activities.
  • May attend training for specific areas of responsibility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
