About The Position

Shriners Children's is the premier pediatric orthopaedic, spinal cord injury, cleft lip and palate, and pediatric subspecialties medical center. We have an opportunity for a Pharmacy Intern to join our team. Under the direct supervision of a SHC-Philadelphia Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Intern will assist in the preparation and delivery of medication for patients, process medication orders accurately and safely according to established departmental guidelines and good manufacturing practices including all facets of sterile compounding. The Pharmacy Intern will also support the mission and vision of the Department of Pharmacy as well as Shriners Hospital for Children.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy and be in good academic standing.
  • Must be registered as a Pharmacy intern with the PA State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Must satisfy all pre-employment requirements for Shriners Children’s including drug screening, child abuse, and FBI background check.
  • Demonstrate strong communications skills both speaking and writing.
  • Demonstrate proficient pharmaceutical calculation skills.
  • Interpret, prepare and dispense medications using appropriate techniques and following the hospitals Policies and Procedures.
  • Demonstrate efficient time management skills.
  • Maintain a professional image at all times.
  • Understand and maintain HIPPA compliance regarding patient confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Generate labels through SHCIS (medication labels, batch fill).
  • Prepare, package and label unit dose medications.
  • Compound extemporaneous preparations in accordance with USP <795> guidelines.
  • Prepare compounded sterile products (CSPs) utilizing established USP <797> guidelines
  • Fill patient medication orders daily and deliver medications to patient care units.
  • Re-Stock, de-stock and support general management of the Automated Dispensing Cabinets.
  • Assist in the quality assurance program for expired medications.
  • Assist in the monitoring and refilling of medication and supplies
  • Perform duties in compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, codes and standards of the Hospital.
  • Gain and understanding of departmental compliance regarding accreditation, legal, regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Develop clinical skills and patient management experience under the supervision of a clinical pharmacist.
  • Pharmacy Interns who demonstrate proficiencies in clinical skill sets will have the opportunity to observe surgery and shadow Anesthesiologists to gain direct experience with medication use in the OR and PACU environments.
  • Rounding with Clinical Pharmacists in the PICU and Medical / Surgical units will be available based on student performance and clinical proficiencies commensurate with their professional year.
  • Pharmacy interns must demonstrate a commitment to the positon regarding scheduling and minimum hours of support during the academic year.
  • As a condition of employment, Pharmacy Interns will be required to be local and available in the summer (May-August) for hours ranging from part time to full time.
  • Failure to comply with established work schedules without prior notification and arrangements for coverage may result in discipline or termination.
