About The Position

Under the general supervision and work direction of the staff pharmacist, the Pharmacy Intern performs pharmacy-related functions, in compliance with departmental policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. This role involves developing an accurate list of current “home” medications using all available resources, including patient/caregiver interviews, contacting community pharmacies or other sources, and utilizing computer resources. The intern will discuss the list with a pharmacist for approval and enter it into the hospital computer system. They will also assist healthcare professionals with Medication Reconciliation issues, provide general assistance to pharmacist staff in completing clinical activities, and perform miscellaneous duties following departmental guidelines and procedures. The intern is expected to use appropriate judgment, refer problems to a pharmacist as needed, and organize time effectively to meet changing workload demands, demonstrating a consistent level of performance. Additionally, the intern may perform basic tasks of other staff during low staff periods within their training boundaries, answer the telephone promptly and professionally, manage multiple priorities, and assist in training new employees and students as requested. They must wear clean, professional clothing, know and follow hospital and departmental procedures, and project a professional image for the department. Adaptability to change, openness to interruptions, and the ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously are important. The role requires a desire to improve skills and processes, initiative, responsibility, and the ability to manage time effectively as a self-starter. Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills are necessary, along with detailed-oriented, accurate, alert, organized, and empathetic behavior. A high level of loyalty, reliability, tactfulness, honesty, and professionalism is expected. The intern will exhibit excellent guest relation skills, showing courtesy, compassion, and respect in all interactions, treating co-workers, patients, and others with dignity and respect. They will provide caring services, understanding and valuing differences, and listen with sensitivity, balancing individual needs with organizational needs. Active participation within the team and holding oneself and team members responsible for accomplishing goals are key. All activities should be directed toward meeting and exceeding the needs of internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Current valid State of Indiana Board of Pharmacy license as Pharmacy Intern

Responsibilities
