About The Position

The Pharmacy Intern at Driscoll Children's Hospital functions as a pharmacy technician and may perform all duties of a pharmacy technician without registering as such. A Pharmacy Intern may only perform pharmacist duties when delegated by and under the supervision of a preceptor pharmacist. At Driscoll, a Pharmacy Intern may not present or identify themselves as a pharmacist, sign or initial any document required to be signed or initialed by a pharmacist unless a preceptor cosigns, independently supervise pharmacy technicians or pharmacy technician trainees, or perform the duties required of a pharmacist. The role involves maintaining utmost confidentiality, adhering to hospital policies and procedures, and demonstrating ethical business practices. The intern works closely with pharmacy personnel to ensure safe and efficient patient care delivery, assists in medication preparation and dispensing, and participates in quality assurance activities. They are responsible for accurate order processing, sterile product preparation following aseptic technique, and outpatient prescription processing with patient counseling under supervision. The intern must understand legal limitations and refer complex situations to a pharmacist. Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Licensed with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Intern.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a registered pharmacy technician is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • May function as a pharmacy technician and perform all duties of a pharmacy technician.
  • May perform pharmacist duties when delegated by and under the supervision of a preceptor pharmacist.
  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Works closely with all pharmacy personnel to assure safe and efficient delivery of patient care.
  • Serves in a professional capacity in patient care areas.
  • Assures departmental policies and procedures are being followed, medication orders are being processed in a timely manner, and the quality of products dispensed meets established guidelines.
  • Assists in the preparation and/or selection of medications.
  • Assures all orders are prepared accurately, are labeled neatly and correctly, and verified by a pharmacist prior to dispensing according to departmental procedures.
  • Participates in medication cart filling and assures that all doses dispensed are consistent with the medication cart fill list.
  • Initiates and processes medication incident reports and adverse drug reaction reports as needed.
  • Answers phone calls promptly and politely by stating departmental area and name.
  • Communicates problems, unique patient needs and other necessary information to on-coming staff for enhanced continuity of care.
  • Communicates with co-workers when leaving the work area.
  • Follows aseptic technique and infection control practices in the preparation of sterile products.
  • Accurately processes outpatient prescriptions and provides oral and written counseling information to the patient and/or parent under pharmacist supervision.
  • Participates in departmental data collection and reporting of Drug Use, Evaluation, Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities within the pharmacy.
  • Routinely checks all available means of communication including e-mail and mailbox.
  • Understands the legal limitations of a pharmacist intern and refers problems or situations requiring professional judgement to a pharmacist.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
