Pharmacy Intern

Intermountain Health
Onsite

About The Position

The pharmacy student (intern) assists pharmacists in providing pharmacy services, including the evaluation and input of licensed independent practitioner orders/prescriptions, and the technical functions of drug procurement, preparation, and distribution. All duties are completed under the supervision of a pharmacist, with the expectation to become proficient in pharmacy technical functions and the basic pharmacology and utilization of medications. At Intermountain Medical Center (IMC), the inpatient pharmacy intern program offers a unique setting for pharmacy students from all years of schooling. Responsibilities advance as interns progress through school, providing experience across the full spectrum of inpatient care, from Central Pharmacy operations to medication history collection and managing clinical consults. First-year interns focus on Central Pharmacy Operations, second-year interns collect accurate medication histories, and final-year interns staff clinical shifts, assisting with therapeutic consults, medication education, and discharging Transplant patients. The program also offers mentorship from pharmacists to develop skills for future residency or job placement. Hours and shifts vary by year in school, with a minimum expectation of 8-10 hours per week, and additional hours often available. Scheduled shifts are based on intern preferences and availabilities. This is a training and learning position for students of an accredited school of pharmacy, required to complete training hours that may be part of a paid internship. Pharmacy Intern Levels I-IV are designated according to a student’s year in pharmacy school, with responsibilities progressing from central pharmacy workflow and automation (Level I) to medication history collection in various hospital departments (Level II and III), and finally to staffing clinical shifts, managing Collaborative Practice Agreements, and providing medication education (Level III and IV).
