About The Position

Supports the Pharmacist's activities, including order processing, manufacturing of all departmental solutions, processing floor stock orders, maintaining drug inventories, and drug deliveries. This role involves answering phones, completing area inspections for outdated medications, delivering medications, and picking up returned drugs. The intern will also demonstrate competence in medication order entry under direct supervision, maintain patient records, and prepare IV admixtures and other compounds accurately and in a timely manner. Additionally, the role includes packaging drugs for individual patient use, preparing patient labels, weighing, counting, and measuring ingredients, and preparing standardized doses of medication. Processing inpatient and/or outpatient orders and prescriptions by entering patient and drug information into the designated computer system is a key responsibility. The intern will also respond to alerts, maintain automated dispensing machines, and other routine equipment.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Pharmacy Intern in State of Florida.
  • CPR: Healthcare Provider
  • Enrolled as a student in an accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Ability to comprehend and analyze information.
  • Knowledge of percentage and basic math calculations.
  • Ability to coordinate the sequence of a process.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Ability to relate cooperatively, courteously and constructively with patients, nursing, personnel, co-workers, physicians, etc. and communicates effectively.
  • Knowledge and skills in IV admixture and Unit Dose medication preparation for inpatient pharmacy or bulk dispensing for outpatient pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of generic and brand medication names.
  • Knowledge of Metric system of measurement.

Responsibilities

  • Answers the phone and directs calls as appropriate.
  • Completes periodic area inspections as assigned for removal of outdated medications prior to expiration of medication.
  • Delivers medications in a timely manner to the designated Nursing Units and picks up returned drugs for credit.
  • Demonstrates competence in medication order entry under the direct supervision of a Licensed Pharmacist.
  • Maintains patient records and profiles.
  • Manufactures specified general departmental IV admixtures syringes and compounds other non-IV medications accurately and in a timely manner as instructed.
  • Packages drugs purchased in bulk for individual patient use.
  • Prepares patient labels, weighs, counts or measuring appropriate medication product or ingredients, and places the finished product in a suitable container for pharmacist check.
  • Prepares standardized doses of medication for patient use.
  • Processes inpatient and/or outpatient orders and prescription by entering the patient information and drug order information, into the designated computer system, accurately and timely.
  • Advises the Pharmacist of incompatibilities or irregularities at the time of entry.
  • Responsible for responding to alerts and maintaining the automated dispensing machines and other routine equipment in the Pharmacy and in the hospital.
