About The Position

Under the direction of the Pharmacy Manager, the Pharmacy Clerk tasks include, but are not limited to the following: Working with patients to obtain necessary information as requested by the pharmacist such as the correct spelling of the patient's name, their address, and any drug allergies. Filing prescriptions for patients; ringing up sales; helping to maintain product inventory on store shelves, keeping work areas clean, and other duties as designated by a pharmacist or store manager. This position description is intended to identify some of the duties and responsibilities of this position. MODOC MEDICAL CENTER reserves the right to modify, supplement, delete or augment the duties and responsibilities specified in this position description, at MODOC MEDICAL CENTER’S sole and absolute discretion.

Requirements

Meets the requirements as set forth by current federal, state and local laws, guidelines and regulations governing retail pharmacy clerks.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language, have good grammar, spelling, and the ability to be accurate.
Ability to work with others, at all levels within the organization, and collaborate effectively.
Above-average interpersonal, problem-solving, and written and oral communication skills.
The ability to help initiate the necessary procedures to start the process of filling the prescription (without actually filling the prescription).
To carry out this ability, the technician needs to be organized and should follow the pharmacy workflow system to expedite work flow.

Responsibilities

Assists in pharmacy activities that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist or the actual filling of a prescription.
Consults regularly with the pharmacist on duty for the purpose of expediting the processing of prescriptions.
Always demonstrates professional behavior, both when on duty and as a representative of the hospital outside of normal work hours.
Always demonstrates a positive working relationship with patients, visitors and facility staff.
Demonstrates organizational ability and time management.
Communicates appropriately, respectfully and clearly to directors, managers, and coworkers.

Answers phone calls, assists public and forwards appropriately if necessary in a professional and friendly manner.
Expedites the processing of prescriptions by performing all duties necessary and allowable, by policy or law, in the preparation necessary prior to the filling of the prescription by the pharmacist and in the distribution of the prescription to the patient, once all necessary dispensing duties are performed by the pharmacist.
When receiving new prescription(s) from the patient, the name and address (if applicable) of the person the prescription is to be filled for, as well as legibility of the prescriber's name are verified.
Enters and editing patient demographics.
Completes and processes third-party documents and other billing documents
Type’s prescription label and/or otherwise enters prescription information into the computer record system, but the responsibility for the accuracy of the prescription information lies with the registered pharmacist.
Completes filing of prescription books, new prescriptions, and patient profiles.
At the request of the registered pharmacist, may also request and receive refill authorization.
Fills bins with prescription vials and replenish other pharmacy supplies as needed.
Cleans pharmacy shelves and work areas and maintain pharmacy premises in a satisfactory state of cleanliness.
Completes other tasks as requested by the pharmacist.
Answers the telephone, directs calls to the pharmacist(s), when appropriate, such as new prescriptions, questions about medications, judgmental decision, etc.
Accommodates patients when they arrive to pick up their prescriptions. This will entail retrieving the prescription from the will call or waiting areas as well as the necessary cash register transaction.
The clerk will be careful to bring to the attention of the pharmacist those prescriptions which are not refills so the pharmacist can provide necessary communication to the patient of instructions, side effects, and description of medication.
The pharmacy clerk will handle the necessary cash register transaction for both new and refill prescriptions.
Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Reports prescription errors to pharmacist on duty immediately and adheres to company policy regarding medication incidents.
The pharmacy clerk may send and receive orders to replenish the pharmacy’s stock, unpack and price the drugs, and place the drugs on the pharmacy’s shelves.
The pharmacy clerk may also pull outdates from pharmacy stock.
Maintains awareness of loss prevention controls and procedures to identify and minimize profit loss.
Properly handles difficult or emotional customer situations; responds promptly to customer needs; solicits customer feedback to improve service; responds to requests for service and assistance; meets commitments; maintains confidentiality.
Ensures current knowledge and consistent application of pharmacy policies.
