About The Position

Texas Oncology is seeking a Pharmacy/Admixture Technician to support their McAllen location. This is a full-time position, Monday-Friday from 8am to 5pm, with no weekends, on-call duties, or major holidays. The position can be filled at Level 1, 2, or Senior based on the candidate's experience. The Pharmacy/Admixture Technician, under the supervision of a physician or registered pharmacist, performs technical, non-judgmental tasks related to medication preparation, distribution, record-keeping, and inventory control within a clinic admixture room or licensed pharmacy. All tasks are subject to final verification by a registered nurse or pharmacist. The role also involves adherence to the US Oncology Compliance Program, Code of Ethics, and Business Standards. Specific state laws may restrict compounding or mixing responsibilities for certain individuals.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Entry level experience in a pharmacy.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate recommended unless required by state law.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a pharmacy with I.V. skills (for Level 2).
  • Minimum five years of experience in a pharmacy with I.V. skills (for Level Sr).
  • Oncology background preferred or extensive I.V. preparation experience (for Level Sr).

Nice To Haves

  • I.V. certification preferred (for Level 2).
  • Completion of an ASHP accredited program or community college-based program recommended (for Level Sr).

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation of medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under supervision.
  • Check all orders for completeness and verify patient information and proper physician authorization.
  • Admix drugs as ordered by a physician in an accurate and timely manner, adhering to department, OSHA, and interoffice guidelines.
  • Calculate correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
  • Assist in controlled substance record keeping in accordance with practice guidelines, state and federal regulations.
  • Dispose of materials used in mixing chemo or non-chemo IVs in accordance with practice guidelines, state and federal law.
  • Clean hoods daily, check drugs monthly for outdates, and perform and document other quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain accurate temperature logs and logs for protocol and patient assistance drugs.
  • Manage inventory appropriately, including proper documentation of inventory quantities, lot numbers and expiration dating when appropriate.
  • Provide support across the medication use continuum including label preparation, documentation perform basic data entry and pre-billing review, , and order medications and supplies as directed.
  • Assist with required cleaning and maintenance of the admixture area and the pharmacy department in accordance with state rules and USP compliance.
