About The Position

Kern Medical is seeking a Per Diem Pharmacist for its Inpatient Pharmacy. As a fully licensed professional, this role involves compounding, preparing, mixing, manufacturing, and dispensing drugs, devices, and biologicals for both inpatient and ambulatory patients. The pharmacist will review drug orders for therapeutic appropriateness, maintain patient drug profiles, and provide essential drug information to healthcare professionals and patients. Responsibilities also include maintaining knowledge of poisons and hazardous substances, pricing prescriptions, supervising charge preparation for pharmacy services, and inspecting medication storage on nursing units. The role involves dispensing or supervising the dispensing of floor stock drugs, preparing complex parenteral solutions, monitoring medication labeling for legal compliance, and overseeing drug storage and distribution systems in outlying clinics. Additionally, the pharmacist will supervise ancillary pharmacy personnel and demonstrate clinical knowledge and skills in patient care across all age groups. Other functions include participating in educational programs, preparing patient medication carts, supervising the dispensing of controlled substances, and implementing automation or computerization where applicable.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized school of Pharmacy.
  • Possession of a valid license to practice Pharmacy issued by the California Board of Pharmacy and fulfillment of the continuing education requirements of the California Board of Pharmacy.
  • Appointees not possessing the American Heart Association Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card at time of hire must successfully complete appropriate training and qualify for the RQI Provider certification within 60 days of employment.
  • As a continued condition of employment, employee must maintain RQI Provider certification and competency.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical mathematics, chemistry, materia medica, and pharmaceutical manufacturing methods.
  • Knowledge of current laws and regulations governing the operation of a pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of drug costs.
  • Ability to prepare a wide variety of drugs and medications.
  • Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with health professionals and the public.
  • Ability to properly direct and supervise the work of ancillary pharmacy personnel.

Nice To Haves

  • Must be willing and available to work four (4) shifts per six (6) week scheduling period.

Responsibilities

  • Compounds, prepares, mixes, manufactures and dispenses drugs, devices and biologicals for inpatient and ambulatory patients.

  • Inspects and maintains inspection records of medication storage on nursing units or public health service sites.
  • Dispenses or supervises the dispensing of floor stock drugs to nursing units.
  • Supervises and prepares parenteral hyper alimentation programs.
  • Prepares complex parenteral solutions such as intrathecal, hyper alimentation, antibiotics and chemotherapy.
  • Monitors all medication labeling for full legal compliance.
  • Monitors systems for drug storage and distribution in outlying clinics.
  • Supervises work of ancillary pharmacy personnel.
  • Demonstrates clinical knowledge and skill in the care of the newborn, infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient ranging up to 100+ years of age.
  • Participates in educational programs for health professionals.
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of patient medication carts for use on nursing units.
  • Supervises and controls the dispensing of narcotics, hypnotics and other "controlled" drugs.
  • Implements automation or computerization where applicable.
  • Performs other duties related to the work of pharmacy practice, as assigned.
