About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This position is in a newly constructed pharmacy in Northwestern Wisconsin, offering a great place to live and work. The Pharmacist reviews, interprets, and dispenses prescription and non-prescription medication in a retail/community pharmacy setting. They play an active role in addressing prescription issues, advising providers on medication selection, dosage, interactions, and side effects. Patient counseling on medication use, potential side effects, expected response, and storage is a key responsibility. The role involves monitoring patient health and progress related to drug therapy and requires the ability to learn and utilize new technology. The Pharmacist provides oversight and clinical supervision for pharmacy services and support personnel. In a medical center or institutional setting, responsibilities include reviewing and interpreting provider orders, providing drug information, assisting with problem-solving, and performing pharmaceutical care duties such as unit dose dispensing, IV Admixtures, outpatient prescriptions, electronic medical record navigation, compounding, and working with automated dispensing devices. The Pharmacist must utilize age-related patient information to assess pharmaceutical needs across all age groups and adhere to all established regulations and standards governing pharmacy practice. They may act as a shift supervisor and must demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills. Pharmacy services can encompass various specialties including acute care surgery, neurology, cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, infusion services, intensive care, general medicine, dialysis, transplant, antimicrobial stewardship, and medication reconciliation. This may involve decentralized clinical functions like direct patient interaction, interdisciplinary team rounding, chart reviews, patient counseling, and medication list collection, as well as centralized functions such as dispensing medications and overseeing the IV room.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions; knowledge of state and local regulations.
  • License must be in good standing by the State Board of Pharmacy in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position.

Responsibilities

  • Review prescriptions to assure accuracy, to ascertain the needed ingredients, and to evaluate their suitability.
  • Provide information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage.
  • Review, interpret and dispense both prescription and non-prescription medication to patients.
  • Take an active role in responding to prescription issues and advising providers on the selection, dosage, interaction and side effects of medications.
  • Counsel patients on the medication prescription including but not limited to: proper administration, possible side effects, expected response, storage and any other questions posed by the patient.
  • Monitor the health and progress of patients in response to drug therapy.
  • Learn and utilize new technology as the profession of pharmacy evolves.
  • Provide oversight and clinical supervision for pharmacy series and pharmacy support personnel.
  • Review and interpret provider orders, provide drug information, assist in problem solving, and provide other aspects of pharmaceutical care.
  • Perform duties such as unit dose dispensing, IV Admixtures, outpatient prescriptions, navigating the electronic medical record, compounding, and working with automated dispensing devices.
  • Utilize appropriate age-related patient information to assess the pharmaceutical needs of patients, which may include provision of pharmaceutical care to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Follow all established regulations and standards that govern the practice of pharmacy.
  • May be required to act as a shift supervisor under direct or indirect supervision by department managers.
  • Demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.
  • May include decentralized clinical functions, such as direct patient interaction/interdisciplinary team rounding, chart reviews, customer or patient counseling, collecting accurate medication list.
  • May also include centralized clinical functions, such as checking and dispensing medications and overseeing the clinical functions of the IV room.
